Re: Strongtown: Suggestions for KC's downtown streets

KCMO has triple the acreage per resident than it did in 1950. that means each of us needs to pay triple the taxes to maintain that infrastructure and fire/police coverage. Well that's simply not true. We didn't develop all the new land with amenities inside the city limits. The strongtowns approach...

Re: Strongtown: Suggestions for KC's downtown streets

FangKC - I usually agree you you, but I respectfully and strongly disagree this time. If you at all subscribe to the StrongTowns message, a large part of the message is about how our modern pattern of growth, that is spread out and much lower density per resident, is what's breaking the bank. KCMO h...

Re: The Junction Before and After, North Loop Removal

Removing the North Loop and creating a whole bunch of new, vacant land in a city already full of vacant, undeveloped land will not achieve the desired objective of densification and increased urbanity. We're NOT Boston. Let's worry about filling up the hundreds of square miles of vacant land AND th...

Re: Strongtown: Suggestions for KC's downtown streets

Chuck is back tonight. He just spoke over lunch to the Chamber of Commerce crowd...many of which are not interested in his kool-aid. I think many are starting to get it, though. Mayor James did not seem to understand it. Mayor Alvey is fully on-board. Here is Chuck's public talk tonight: https://www...

Re: The Junction Before and After, North Loop Removal

I have not followed this thread or any of the previous discussions or proposals for the north loop. That said, this is a diagram of how I always wanted to see it changed. Fill in the highway with a park that is level with the surrounding streets. Allow 6th and Independence Ave to function as a boule...

Re: Westport

Also notice bikes aren’t allowed at all. Bicyclists are just going to take their business elsewhere The hoards of 11pm-3am cyclists will be appalled. I was in the district until 10pm on Saturday and all was well. None of these measures were in place at that time. All this fret, but it only affects ...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Westport had this same problem about 5 years ago and poisoned over 50 street trees. They got serious about tree health after that and the WRBL started educating the property owners and managers about proper snow treatment. They understand the value those street trees provide and want to preserve tha...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Kansas City is ... Good comments FangKC. All true. I specialize in this issue and I have been watching the Plaza trees closely. The key reason for so many dead trees on the Plaza this year is the salt. They are spreading too much salt. They are spreading it too sloppily and are throwing it onto the...

FangKC wrote:No. Why would you combine a memorial to WWI war dead with a civil rights leader that was killed 50 years later? Doesn't compute.
The point is that many of these other suggestions are nearly as ridiculous.

Re: Black leaders seek to rename Paseo to MLK Blvd

Whose Neighborhood Should Get a Street Named for Dr. King? https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/15/us/martin-luther-king-streets-kansas-city.html I will admit that when I travel to unfamiliar cities and I see a MLK Blvd on the map, that is an indicator that I should avoid that area because it will be bl...

Re: Black leaders seek to rename Paseo to MLK Blvd

Not to be cold on the subject, but did MLK ever visit KC? He is a huge and important historic figure, but can't we promote the name of local civil rights figures that were important to our local history? I feel like we are playing copy-cat to every other metro in the U.S....and way late, I might add...
