Re: Main Street MAX
ignatius, i haven't used other US bus systems much, but I spent some time in London recently where they have a very extensive mass transit system. The buses go all over from the city center to suburbs. I used them for everything from siteseeing to a bachelor party to getting to/from the airport - an...

Re: Main Street MAX
The problem with the Downtowner was that they funded it with a time-limited federal grant and didn't have replacement funding lined up except for the failed Prop. B. This isn't BRT, it's BRT Lite or something. The real thing will be more frequent. The 51/56/57 routes are somewhat staggered. I haven'...

Re: Main Street MAX
They would probably need to double the number of buses to get 5-10 minute intervals, which wouldn't make much sense when they are gonna buy new buses just for the BRT in a few years. We already have a good link. The 56 and 57 routes run 20 minutes between the 10th and Main transit plaza and the J.C....

Re: Main Street MAX
ATA's application for funds from MARC indicates that they plan to begin running the starter service in May, and intend for it to be replaced with real BRT within three years. PDF: http://www.marc.org/transportation/cmaq/Transit.pdf#page=19 It is supposed to run 18 hours per day 7 days a week, with f...

Sunday Liquor EVERYWHRE!!!
Here in CA we get a lot of different West Coast micro brews and even a few from Colorado. But so far, no Boulevard. Boulevard focuses on being a local/regional brewery and purposefully limits their distribution to the Midwest. They don't want to expand nationally, so don't look for them in Cali any...

I think there are 2 or 3 Barleys in Joco. I've been to one somewhere way out west by a Dickinson megaplex. The huge amount of beers on tap was really cool, but otherwise it was just your average generic suburban bar and suburban frat crowd. I'll take River Marke or McCoys any day.

Re: OFFICIAL - Arena construction
However, this doesn't change the fact that the city is broke, with (someone remind me) how many millions in deferred maintenance? Downtown provides around 20-30% of the city's entire tax revenue, which is a huge share for such a small area. Anything that can stimulate a net increase in tax revenue ...

If i remember correctly, that was the original intent of the theatre disctict. To have educational type shows till the evening, then move into a more adult oriented area. It never materialized. It was, but they haven't really offered anything that interested anyone, at least until the now. I have h...

Is the Little Blue Valley in a Flood Plain?
All of the development in Eastland and Hartmen Center seems to be in a really low-lying area, and it doesn't look like the Little Blue River channel doesn't have much room to accomodate excess water. On the southwest corner of 291 and 40 Hwy there are new houses almost righ up against the river. How...

Bass Pro - DOWNTOWN?
Another prolem with putting this thing Downtown is that it will probably generate a lot of ill will towards Downtown from the people in southeastern Kansas City who are really pissed off that the Bannister Mall deal fell through.

Arcadia coming in Independence (1000 home neo-traditional)
Channel 4 covered the opponents forum last night, it lasted several hours and there were a lot of pissed off people opposing this project. There could be a lot of trouble getting this approved if there is a lot of uproar. Seems to be a lot of the usual complaints about people moving to rural areas i...

OFFICIAL - IRS HQ construction
In KCTV5's story on this project they mentioned something about IRS workers griping about having to work downtown. I woud imagine that right now most of them live southern burbs and beyond, since the two current offices are on Bannister and 119th and Whatever. For someone who lives in Harrisonville...

San Diego, City of Villages
http://www.sannet.gov/cityofvillages/index.shtml San Diego has a very interesting plan that is similar to FOCUS but goes even further. It encourages multiple mixed-use neighborhood clusters of housing, jobs, schools, libraries, etc. - so that in theory you could do most of your daily business in the...

Missouri Retail Numbers
The Examiner has an article on 2002 retail sales numbers in Missouri. No surprise that Independence and Lee's Summit are big winners. What is surprising is that KCMO had a 5% decline in retail sales. Even after all of the huge subsidies we have handed out for strip malls in the Northland, we are sti...

Is Cordish Co. good for downtown?
Many in here, including me, agree with that assessment. Me too. Generally speaking, when the market rules, the people win. Great examples are the Crossroads, West 39th St, Northtown, Mission, and Main Street in Lee's Summit. Those are all successful places because of small businesses rather than a ...
