Re: We need a new airport!!!

I thought this was an interesting message posted on the bottom of a blog I just found: Kansas City Deputy Aviation Director Justin Meyer sent me this response to Bill’s comment: 1. The three terminals do not have 90 gates and they never have had 90 gates. They have about 15 jet-bridges/gates each fo...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

They numbered to be able to have 1-30 in A, 31-60 in B, 61-90 in C. If it ever had that many is a different point, but it's clear how that idea became a thing. There's flights in gates 81 to 83, for example. Never had that many nor was it ever designed to in any configuration. That's just how it wa...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

KCI's Director of Aviation Pat Klein is the one that said Southwest declined to move to terminal A and said they wanted a new terminal. If you think that's inaccurate, take it up with him, but I have reason to suspect he's talked with Southwest a time or two. KCI has a max configuration of 60 gates ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

KCI still isn't back to the passenger traffic the airport did pre-9/11. The record passenger count was 11.9 million in 2000 and 2001 would have hit more than 12 million passengers had 9/11 not derailed things. Kansas City has grown substantially over the past 17 years. It's shocking to me that despi...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

So they were supposed to keep terminal A open just for United? I'm not sure how many gates United has, but I don't think it's that many (maybe 4). I seriously doubt keeping United there by themselves would dramatically impact the experience flying out of terminal C. It certainly wouldn't impact term...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

I disagree that better management can solve these problems. Not having enough room to properly manage deplaning/boarding of a flight is not a management issue. Having to put people in wheelchairs in front of a restaurant entrance because no where else exists (except 2 gates away) is not a managemen...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

KCI just came in as the 15th most hated airport in America and was the only small airport on the entire list.

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Justin Meyer had an interesting series of tweets this morning that showed how at peak times on Southwest and United, KCI's security can't handle all the people that need to get through security. It shows year over year how United has added 235 seats (no new flights), but how it swamps security. 45 m...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

This gal does a great job of putting KCI into perspective: http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/community/joco-913/joco-diversions/article154767429.html Good editorial. It basically says what I've been saying here for years - KCI's convenience is mythical and overplayed. Go walk on the people mover...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Thanks for the update. I've been told that Southwest essentially can't get any more flights into Chicago or Dallas and need flights in the central U.S., which is why they've added so many more flights in St. Louis rather than KC (just can't connect passengers in KC). And apparently they can't make a...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

At this point there's a good baseline with the current plan but it would be nice to see some more ideas. What would be really interesting is for a company to come in with a really competitive renovation plan that comes in way lower than the city's numbers and produces something equally useful to bu...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

The reality is if a multi-terminal design made the most sense for KCI and was the best design, that's what we would be doing. No one intentionally tries to design a crappy airport. Just like KCI never would have been designed with 3 semi-circles had they anticipated how big a threat terrorism would ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

The City needs to quantify the savings from financing. They should also quantify the likely fee increase per ticket. They already did. It was $2.10 one way. Airline pricing is more complex than that, but if you wanted to look at it simply, it would be $4.20 more in fees that are part of each round ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

The idea that the polling has shifted (or will shift) enough to pass between now and anytime soon is madness. This concept has to move the needle a little at least. 1. The needle needs to move A LOT. A lot a lot. 2. While Loar rarely does anything based on constituent desires on not her own self-in...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

^^ I guess that I don't buy that the 'time/money' value for just a few months until a fall election would be worth the considerable effort and risk B&M would have to undergo. The only reason I would see is that this way would bypass the bid process for them and guarantee them the business. But,...

Re: Northland Population Growth

I've generally looked at ACTs as well in the past because it's one way to gauge schools on a common test. One big difference in Liberty's case is every kid in school takes the ACT whether or not he/she has any intention or not of going to college. So when you have that many additional kids taking th...

Re: Northland Population Growth

Unfortunately I don't have a BizJournal subscription, but I can at least get the gist of it from the first part. I'll be really interested to see how that turns out. Liberty is highly, highly motivated to grow residential. They really feel like they got left behind. It's probably been 4 years or so ...

Re: Northland Population Growth

What's the north/south population split now? That data is really hard to find. I spent entirely too much time on google trying to figure it out. Below is a post from another message board was the best I could find. Not sure how accurate it is, but I always thought KCMO north of the river was a litt...
