Re: Nordic Windpower relocates to KC

Is KC to become the wind power center of the US?  Another one is moving here from Oregon.  Looks like an opportunity for KC to develop startup backend support companies needed for the manufacturers.

Re: trader joe's.

oh yeah, i'm probably one of gomer's biggest customers.. they all know me.  if i see jim in the store, i jump straight to him for advice for the meal at hand.  just saying that tj's does have doable cheap old world's that are headache free. what's great about gomer's is i can travel the world, find ...

Re: trader joe's.

i'm not really into tj's two buckers but they do have some doable old world vino for under $10.  they are young wines (1-2 years old) but still pretty good considering the price.  downed an earthy froggy rhone region the other night... $7.. and no headache (which young wines can do).

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

I'll agree with you there.  The more jobs downtown, the greater increase in downtown momentum. Downtown KC has about 10% of the metro workforce.  Cities with high functioning downtowns tend to have about 12%-15% of metro workforce downtown. And while many here want light rail to magically solve all ...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

We didn't misunderstand what Highlander is saying, just respectfully disagreeing.  Talking in circles here.  Highlander's case is lacking support given that downtown is growing.  Flocking, no, but there is enough to sustain the momentum. I still don't think there is a people supply issue to support ...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

It's not enough to say the DINK-single-gay crowd that prefers urban life is growing in numbers because the results of that growth do not seem to be having a correlatable impact on the KC's core. Obviously it did.  Downtown has grown plain and simple.   Just because it's not at the rate of others do...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

Highlander, I can't find a stat on dinks but it's also pretty obvious that demographic is growing, as well as a larger number of people in general who never plan to have kids, moreso than 10-20 years ago.  I can't find a stat to support this but would you agree this appears to be growing?  More and ...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

this is interesting if accurate... http://www.unmarried.org/statistics.html there were higher % of unmarried people in late 1800s.  nevertheless since the 60s, the rate of single people is increasing and is hardly a 'limited' demographic. http://www.unmarried.org/images/stories/percent_unmarried.jpg

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

Just checked JoCo.. its about 55/60% female/male adults married - oddly they using age 15 instead of 18 so would be higher than that but still, single people are hardly a 'limited' demographic and the rate of single/dinks/etc are growing even compared to just 10 years ago. A good chunk (25% or more ...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

My point is that even by US stats, single people, dinks etc, are hardly a 'limited' demographic. And the rate of single people is increasing.   I couldn't find the metro stats but if I recall it's not much different.  I only showed KCMO because it was easier to find.  I believe the metro at a whole ...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

Single people and DINKS and gays are a limited population demographic. Not sure what you mean by that.  KCMO only had about 40% married female adults and 45% male in 2009.  The US average was 48% and 52% respectively.  The 2000 estimate was 42% female and 48% male married in KC with US avg as 52% a...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

how so?  the thread is about young people leaving the city when they have kids.  i'm pointing out that there is an increase of singles/dinks that don't intend to ever have kids, so that form of city core exodus may not necessarily happen.

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

would agree that downtown KC is not increasing at the rate of large cities, but the point is not about that.  it's that the increase of singles/dinks who plan to stay childless will increase and help support the momentum in any city core, including KC's reasonably good direction towards allowing for...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

I see very few empty nesters and practically no middle/upper class families in KC's core.   A majority of condo sales on the Plaza are empty nesters.  I live in a large condo building that is 75% empty nesters.  Many who move in my building wonder why they didn't do it as soon as the kids moved out...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

In KC, I'd venture to guess the vast majority of singles and childless couples live in the burbs. KC has not made the urban core a compelling place to be for any group. Agree that probably about 75% of singles/dinks do live in the burbs, at the same general rate of the population (for now).  But KC...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

but what about after they have kids? breeding is so last human era seems to be heading that way to some degree anyway.  there are more singles/childless couples than ever and those who intend to stay that way are increasing, enough to sustain city cores. most core cities have about a 25%-30% share ...

Re: Kotkin: Young people will leave the city for the 'burbs

Not sure if this was posted.. the flipside to the discussion...

Are you ready for the new urbanites?
Younger generations want to live in dense, walkable, 24-7 urban neighborhoods filled with apartments.

Re: Study of the STL Region - Contains many lists/rankings incl. KC.

another migration study shows that most of indy migration comes from chicago and the rest of the state.

these migration numbers come from census data.  it will be interesting to see the report that comes from IRS data, which is considered to be more accurate.

Re: Study of the STL Region - Contains many lists/rankings incl. KC.

Is good to see KC still getting an above average domestic in-migration...  No surprise in the Midwest it's Indy, Columbus and KC. NET DOMESTIC MIGRATION Percent of 2000 population, 2000-2009 1 Charlotte 18.2% 2 Austin 17.7 3 Phoenix 16.2 4 San Antonio 10.2 5 Atlanta 9.6 6 Nashville 9.2 7 Portland 6....

Re: Study of the STL Region - Contains many lists/rankings incl. KC.

few observations... many of these stats are based on the 2009 'american community survey', of which some turned out to be way off base for many categories when the 2010 census came out.  since the ratio of error is probably the same for most metros, the ordering may still be valid, just not the valu...
