Best Restaurant in K.C. for Thanksgiving?

The Savoy serves a traditional Thanksgiving dinner in addition to regular menu. The Elms in Excelsior Springs has a nice buffet but you have to be there by noon to see the best selection

Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Diego

Barney's Beanery is infamous as the dive where for years hanging over the bar was a sign "No Fags Allowed." Which is ironic because it is within the city limits of West Hollywood(boystown for those not familiar with L.A.)

great new skyline panorama

Now that the west side of St. Mary's is coming down, a new view from the highest hill around is opening up. If you drive north on Baltimore from 31st you can see it. When the old hospital is completely raised there will be a wide panorama centered on the Liberty Memorial and including Crown Center. ...

Louis Kahn Skyscraper in Dowtown KC

Interesting sideline in KC Star FYI section TV page. Tonight on Cinemax is profile of architect Louis Kahn. Article makes reference to building that was to have gone up where City Center Square is. Was to be built from top down with 30 floors hanging from bridge structure at top. Would have been muc...

OFFICIAL - Federal Reserve HQ construction

The 909Walnut building was not designed a a federal facility, it was built for a bank that went belly up in the great depression(see their lobby tables in the main post office). From what I can surmise the new Fed will be at lest twice as tall as the old hospital and only 3-4 floors lower than the B...

A frame for the memorial

Henry Cobb also designed the office building in Crown Center at the junction of Main & Grand. In an interview when that building went up he explained (and I am roughly paraphrasing from a dusty memory) rather than building a stand alone monument, he was attempting to create a frame for space. Ma...

87th Street

I caught a discussion on the city government channel and it was mentioned that 87th between 435 and 71 was to be rebuilt and widened, the mined area to the south was to be reclaimed for light industrial and the area to the north of 87th will become on office park, "the next corporate woods.&quo...

football stadium in west bottoms

For a people mover from the downtown loop/bus rapid transit could be a modern version of the 9th St. incline, including reopening the tunnel. This was used to move quite a lot of people from/to the train depot prior to the building of Union Station.

rat castle

A story that I have heard for years is that Janis Joplin lived in the rat castle for a spell in the sixties. Does anyone know if this is true or is just a K.C. urban legend? They were renovated in the late eighties into tiny apartments instead of the multistory rowhouses they should be.

law building

This ungraceful structure is not worth a fight to save it. I believe the block should be redeveloped as a whole. It is primely located between the Sprint Center, Power & Light District. An ideal spot for a tall office tower, as it would align with all the other most recent high rises on 12th Str...

Denver Dowtown Impressions

I stayed at the Hyat Regency in downtown Denver last week. Had a perfect view of the "cash register" skyscraper. The top of this building is really the only signature or interesting high rise profile. The Qwest tower is an interesting design of interlocking octangles. Most of the dowtown h...

The monuments depicted for Broadway and I-70 are indeed what are being built. They will be more impressive at night as they are supposed to incorporate neon in the lighting scheme.

BSP and 43rd street

All that empty green space setback was put in as there are plans by the city someday to widen and improve 43rd street. There will be a turn lane in the center of the steet like on Wesport Rd. When this will happen I have no clue, very dissappointed in our district councilman.

bishop spencer---better than what was there

I have lived 2 blocks from BSP (or what was there prior) for 14 years. While I dont care for the cheap anti urban architecture, it is a hell of a lot better than the ghetto that existed there before. Bunch of crack houses and even burnt out shells. At least the BSP residents are well heeled (it cost...

Re: OFFICIAL - Arena construction

Frank Gehry had some problems designing buildings to be safe in their climates. The law library at Case Western Univ. in Cleveland has to be roped off in winter because snow avalanches down the slick sides. Now the new Disney Hall in L.A. has to have tarps covering portions because the concave and c...

This great old garage is almost completely torn down now. The only other remaining art deco parking garage is slated to be torn down for the P & L District(the one on Main with Time to Read on the ground floor). The only other art deco garage I recall was the one behind the Empire, and it was on...

longlines history

I do believe this building was erected shortly after WWII, but I am not sure. However I do remember that prior to the early 1970's the building was only half its current height, up to the portion with windows. There was a microwave tower rising above that is now almost buried nextto the awful metal ...
