Re: Gay marriage

I didn't mean to imply that all of the answers had to be decided all at once. My list of questions had to do more with the statement to make marriage a private contract. Much like the issue of abortion, and now the Texas Supreme Court saying spousal benefits doesn't apply to gay marriage (the US Sup...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Pash, your reply was "No, I'm not" when you made your reply to my statement that you were using the wrong number. Below are the budget numbers for the Aviation Department as a whole. You used the number of around $85M for 2015 operating expenditures. Of course I am not sure of your source ...

"This is simply not true. Stare decisis binds courts inferior to the court that decided the issue (this means a court of appeals, not just a supreme court, can bind lower courts), as well as the court itself that decided the issue. A trial judge in District A, confronting an issue that has alre...

Re: OFFICIAL: Port Authority Riverfront Project

FWIW, if the rendering is anything at all of what the project will be then that will definitely be a shame. Being close to the river why not create something like what one might find along an old riverfront. Old warehouse building space converted to restaurants and bars. Throw in a mix of service bu...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Operating expense does not equal cash expenditures. Cash expenditures generally exceed operating expenses due to overhead and capital improvements which can be rather substantial to say the least. The number I quoted is the "operating expenditures" line-item from the 2015 annual report. &...

"The principle of stare decisis is meant to ensure that there is uniformity on how cases are decided." Stare decisis basically only applies once a state or the US Supreme Court decides on an issue. My reference of course was to decisions made by the lower courts on the various issues that ...

Re: Gay marriage

I don't think privatizing marriage is all that simple. For one is offspring. You would have birth mother and birth father but how would you recognize the other partners in the marriage? Another is financial support after the marriage ends. To an extent most, if not all, states already recognized pri...

New owners could rejuvenate the mall much like was done with Ward Parkway. True, there isn't that much close-by competition to Ward Parkway but new owners could possibly pick it up on the cheap and have funds left over for a make-over. Was at the IC last Christmas season and I don't remember seeing ...

Re: Vote Yes or No? A Discussion on the Pros and Cons of Chastain's Plan

I'm still a fan of the gondolas. The idea of going over something to bridge a gap is valid. It's why the city is talking about a streetcar to the riverfront, because it's bridging a gap that's hard to walk. Imagine money was no issue and we need to find a way to connect Crown Center better to Penn ...

It's across street from it. It would be funny if Menards also opened at intersection. Here in the Belton/Raymore area Lowe's, Home Depot, Menard's are in close proximity to each other. Menard's and Home Depot are almost back-to-back along the highway with Lowe's about a mile away to the east. Consi...

Re: Gay marriage

Laws tend to be made after advances or social acceptance or demand occurs. For instance consider test tube babies, surrogate moms, sperm donors, egg donors, etc. Medical science was way ahead of the legislatures on parenthood, whose property sperm/eggs belong to, and so on. With regards to marriage ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Moving back into A would increase operational costs by roughly a third without any increase in revenue. No increase unless the airlines increase their fees to offset the higher costs. I would imagine it was a business decision to close Terminal A that took many factors into account. But opening up t...

OMG, all of this moaning and groaning about the veto. Is it a setback? Sure is but it sounds like the UM system was already working on Plan B to get it done.
Much like the streetcar, the powers-to-be will find a way to get it done. So go ahead and cry in your beer or whatever else you drink.

Re: Did section 8 housing kill Bannister Mall?

There was a new housing development being built in the 70's located by Longview Rd and Food Lane, just north of Grandview. My wife and I even looked at buying in that area in the 70's and I knew a few people that lived there. The developer/builder was financed by HUD (as I understand) and eventually...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

What's the difference between an airport with flights to lots of hubs and being a hub? It's if one or many airlines provide the service. Basically the flights from the smaller airports are to the hubs. For example Des Moines has direct flights to 20 large or nearby large cities. But only 4 of those...
