Re: Unfounded Hatred of KC Suburbs

Urbanists are sometimes ignorant to the benefits/advantages of suburban living and vice versa...
What benefits?  :-s

Re: Are Downtowns in Danger of Going Downhill Again?

Midtown, back then you had businesses in the base of buildings with office and residential on top. Yes they had squares, but if you look at European cities, those are simply places of gathering, places for the marketplace (like our River Market), etc... Not all of the businesses were located there. ...

Re: Are Downtowns in Danger of Going Downhill Again?

Big projects and thinking big are bad for urban areas. Urban areas need to be developed like they were before the 20th Century, building by building, all below 15-20 stories. Today we are applying suburban principles to urban areas. We feel like we need to develop BIG and tear down old buildings and...

Re: Are Downtowns in Danger of Going Downhill Again?

Downtowns are def. in danger of going downhill again, and if KC's does, it's def. not because of Funkhouser. It's because we are putting all our investments into developing huge blocks and projects, as well as developing skyscrapers that are supposed to hold large businesses or large numbers of resi...

Re: Excelsior Springs

Excelsior def. hasn't done much to help itself. It's tried in the past, but it just hasn't done much except resurfacing the streets and sidewalks, and the renovation of a couple buildings. More families have been moving into houses in the downtown area though. Usually you have to hit the town during...

Re: Unfounded Hatred of KC Suburbs

akp, suburbs have been around for longer than the 1800s, it's just they weren't like they are now until 50-60 years ago.

In the 1800s (and early 1900s) you had the streetcar suburb, which is what most of urban KCMO is...

Re: Unfounded Hatred of KC Suburbs

It isn't that suburban residents are horrible, but it's because of their lack of knowledge and ignorance (not using as an insult) of urban areas that sometimes people get mad. People in the suburbs more than often equate urban with blacks, cities with crime, drugs, poverty and general filthiness. I'...

Re: Unfounded Hatred of KC Suburbs

They weren't created to destroy cities, but we know KNOW what happens, and for suburbs to continue the status quo of what they were doing, is a show of incompetence and ignorance, as well as an unwillingness to help out the entire city rather than just helping themselves. Are suburbanites and urbani...

Re: Unfounded Hatred of KC Suburbs

Cheffreygo, I don't think you understand the dislike for suburbs... People need to learn what suburbs cause, what they stand for, and the massive amount of harm that they cause.

Re: Kansas City Officially Has A New Mayor - Mark Funkhouser

I personally don't wish to have people so cramed togeather that when I fart my neighbor knows what I had for lunch. Well then, you definitely wouldn't like to live in a city. Maybe you'd like to try a real village and the rural life? My friend, this: http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/environmentandene...

Re: Kansas City Officially Has A New Mayor - Mark Funkhouser

Did you all not read my post after that one? Anyway, I stand by my decision, you all just need to stop whining about it. It isn't like you can do anything about it. I don't think we should build a few rowhouses where we should build a high rise hotel and bartle hall expansion. Apparently you don't b...

Re: KC Boulevards and Parks: Revamp Idea

I'm not saying mirror the Parisian boulevards in function, but rather somewhat in apperance. One of th emost important things IMO in streetscapes are trees. Sidewalks should IMO be wide enough to accomodate trees. This also provides the width to help make it comfortable for pedestrians. Trees, in ad...

Re: KC Boulevards and Parks: Revamp Idea

I think some streets ought to be lowered to 2 lanes, but definitely not all of the streets, maybe most of the streets ought to be reduced to 4 lanes. Something else that I've bene thinking about. Our parks and our city ought to take a lesson from one thing that is good about many suburban developmen...
