Re: Union Station
One thing that I think could really help Union Station also is a more welcoming connection from the Crossroads to the Freighthouse Bridge. Especially with the PAC--it's quite striking how Wyandotte funnels straight to the bridge and you have very clear views all the way down. But right now those vie...

Re: good bar to read a book?
The basement has some pretty loungey spaces, but I'm not sure what their business model is right now--if it's a club with dues or if anyone can drink there?heatherkay wrote:I wasn't sure if Cellar and Loft was a bar or more a tasting area for wine sales. I thought it was more the latter.

Too late for last night, but what about Cellar and Loft? Is that place still open?
Also, what book?
Also, what book?

Re: We need a new airport!!!
I think the point is that hubs can be effective connecting cities rather than destination cities. They can be destinations, too; but conceivably international flights originating or terminating in Omaha, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Memphis, Oklahoma City, etc. could connect through KC rather than Dallas...

Re: Google picks KCK/KCMO for ultra fast fiber network
The other point is that the Google articles about KC Startup Village seem to imply KC has very few and is just getting started., which is not the case. It is quite something to watch the way stories start and develop. I would agree that there is some tinge of that in the reporting, but to me it's j...

Re: Google picks KCK/KCMO for ultra fast fiber network
There have also been a lot of articles about KC Startup Village. It's nice attention but it kind of implies KC doesn't have much of a tech scene and is just getting started, which is hardly true. The vast majority of KC's tech scene is people in corporate IT. It's the tech start-up scene that gets ...

Re: Locatarian eats|shops|markets
They closed a seed round earlier this year that included funding from Andreessen Horowitz, one of the top Silicon Valley VCs, so it will be interesting to see wether they stay in KC (I think they've been in Fairway) or move to the Valley. Was pleased to run into one of their guys that had moved out...

Re: As convention biz dwindles, KC goes after 3rd tier group
Language-specific programming conferences like PyCon and RubyConf are about the right size and would be great for the local tech community, but I don't know how interested they would be in coming to a non-tourist city. Better than a one-off thing, in my opinion, would be annual regional conferences...

Re: Downtown for Retirees?
Did you mean to type Martin City? It's at 135th and Holmes -- not the urban core by any stretch. Yes. Living in the city's core has no appeal to either my wife or I. Mentioned Brookside and the Plaza as an outside chance of happening but a chance of that happening would be one in a million. But at ...

Re: As convention biz dwindles, KC goes after 3rd tier group
There are, however, lots of other tech conferences that do take place in a new city each year. I can't think of a reason that KC would be particularly attractive to any of them, though. ... This is explicitly one of our playbook plays, and if anyone wants to start a running list of good such confer...

Re: We need a new airport!!!
And also, the gates are not nearly large enough for a 747, let alone a AB380 and have customs etc.. in the same terminal. I've flown overseas from many airports around the country and KCI just isn't designed for it. It would be a patchwork bandage that would make operating a pain in the ass for the...

Re: We need a new airport!!!
Agree on international flights...understanding that we'll never be O'Hare/DIA/DFW...etc...would be nice to have the ability if demand/technology/etc. make it possible at KCI. KC desperately needs this. In an era where companies are becoming more international, not having direct flights to internati...

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Is there any chance the streetcars will actually look good, for example, like this: I'm not trying to be snarky here--is there a material difference between the streetcars in those two photos that distinguishes cool/contemporary vs. old/outmoded? It looks like one is on a curved track and one is on...

Re: New Partners for Smart Growth Conference - February 2013
That's cool to hear. In general, what has been the overall impression from the participants about KC? Quite positive, somewhat curious. As earthling points out, there is a huge amount of interest in this project and how we organize as a city to capitalize; and I think it's accurate also, that most ...

Re: New Partners for Smart Growth Conference - February 2013
It's nice to see Kansas City getting in on the national discussion on urbanism. KC is also hosting the Summit on the New American City in early December. And the global conversation. Just returned from the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, where both Mayors James and Reardon presented. A...
