Re: Great Plains Aquifer Beginning to Run Dry
With all of the arid land out there that will become unviable once the aquifer is depleted, it would be nice to see large swaths of it set aside to be returned to its natural prairie state, bison and all.

Re: NW 64th St redo
It might have good bike facilities for a suburban area, and might have an isolated mixed-use-ish development that's at least trying, but it's still horribly spread out, almost exclusively car-oriented and surrounded by dead-octopus subdivisions. Don't forget that NW 64th is also a MoDOT-controlled S...

Re: KC tech|startups|entrepreneurial thread
I've heard that Perceptive likes to go after Cerner employees, but many who work at the NKC campus are reluctant to take a job at Perceptive's office in the hinterlands. Cerner could be hurting themselves here by locating more employees farther out, lessening the incentives for them to stay with Cer...

^Mind if I ask where you two are from, this side of Midwest, larger/smaller city? A small town in SE Missouri. St. Louis was my big city growing up. My parents made an effort to expose us to the city on a regular basis, and while they were realistic about some of the problems facing the city the on...

There's more fuel for the fire that non-natives can look at KC objectively and see that there's more going on here than some of the 'burb-bound natives want to give it credit for.
Full disclosure: I'm a non-native who thinks KC is pretty damn spiffy.

Re: Generic ongoing KCATA thread
Does anybody know the reasoning used when the ATA purchases the shorter buses with one door versus two doors? I can't seem to discern any rhyme or reason here, whether it be the routes they're operated on or the times. It seems like the second door just eliminates seating. In a related thread, does ...

I guess they're going to nuke those houses south of 45th. There's a large empty parcel south of 45th along Belleview, but the description doesn't sound like they're talking about that.

Re: Gay marriage
Not with the current legislature, unless somebody initiates a court action would be my guess. There *might* be an absolute majority of Missouri residents that would support legalizing marriage in the state, but we can look at the legislature and see how much difference that makes.

That 47th Street closure is really going to screw the Max up. The intersection of 47th & Main is already a huge delay point and I can't see them just skipping the Plaza stop. I wonder what detour they will use?

Re: The KCMO School District
I often wonder about year-round school. We spend quite a few resources on efforts over the summer to keep kids engaged and out of trouble when they have all of that extra free time. There are also a few studies about how much kids lose over summer from the previous year and how much time is spent at...

Re: Ballpark Village v4.7 (st. louis)
The Post-Dispatch does some soul searching on "CarPark" Village and parking downtown in general. They're having a lot of the same discussions we're having over here about parking in general. KC may be paying out quite a bit on P&L to cover the bonds, but at least we're not subsidizing ...
