Re: There's no place like Kansas City - CNN
Check out CNN.com today (Travel Section). There is an article called "There is no place like Kansas City-This Midwestern town is sizzling". I think the article originated from Cooking Light. Positive press! Sorry, I don't know how to link. And, sorry if this has been brought up else...

Re: OFFICIAL - Arena construction
A bit of a change of subject but Arena related. The information in the Star is ambiguous, did KC just get awarded the 2008 Big XII B-Ball tourney or are we now the permanent site for the tournament? As I said, the star's wording is a bit confusing. Thanks.

Re: So Kansas City becomes the next boomtown, what next?
The suburbs would have to limit their growth and the inner ring would have to densify. With all of that, we could double gracefully. Nice thought but I think we all know that would not happen. Look at Denver, its a faddish city and despite all the praise we heap on its urbanity, it's one massivel...

Re: Lawrence cell phone ban would be strictest
The biggest distraction is children in cars. If we can get a ban on those then by trickle-down effect no more babies crying in movie theaters and no more kids running around wild in restarants. Hooray! :) Actually, the biggest distraction, and this is pretty much supported by insurance compan...

Fantastic news indeed. Now, let's get a tentant that will be there for more than one weekend a year. Looks like the NHL is the fan's choice.

Re: Lawrence cell phone ban would be strictest
Not so much development news, but interesting. The proposed Lawrence ordinance — up for discussion Monday by the Traffic Safety Commission — would ban the use of both hand-held cell phones and hands-free cell phone devices by motorists. http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2006/jun/01/lawrence_cell_pho...

Re: OFFICIAL: Power & Light District
As I understood it from the more recent KC Star articles, isn't construction set to begin in earnest in June? June is here, be interesting to watch the webcams to see if anything starts happening here soon.

Re: Missouri Roads
although in that link I published it states open tolling is better for short distances.....I think it would work instead of retrofitting the 5,000 exit ramps on 70....with closed tolling, you would also kill many of those small businesses that rely on interstate travel patrons. The other factor is ...

Re: June '06: First Friday + gay pride "Galleries & Gays" {Part One}
I'll definately schedule my next trip back to coincide with First Friday. It's really great to see a lot people on the streets of KC, gay or straight. The Pride shirts though look like advertisements for laundary detergent.

Re: Drive-thru Starbucks coming to Midtown
This will show how out of touch with the US retail scene I am but when did the concept of a drive-through Starbucks arrive anyway? Coffee and driving never mixed for me, especially coffee with a creamy cap. I suspect the average customer must be planning on doing the actual drinking when they get ...

Re: Tours of Kemper Arena?
I don't know where this would really fit, so I just put it here. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any tours of Kemper Arena. Since the Sprint Center is about to be built and we don't really know the future of Kemper, I would just like to get one last thorough look at Kemper and see things I ...

Re: OFFICIAL - Bartle Hall Expansion construction
This is kind of a side question. But where in heck can Bartle be expanded next? Does it need to be expanded? I would be curious how it ranks in size compared to other city's convention centeres? Bartle is a bit strange as CC's go in that it is pretty central. Many other cities have their CC's o...

Re: OFFICIAL - Bartle Hall Expansion construction
It'll be nice to have one more block of the 670 loop debacle covered soon with a decent structure... While this is very true, Bartle Hall is kind of the Twilight Zone of public space. It really creates a lot of dead space smack in the middle of downtown. Hopefully, the expansion will provide some...

Re: Crime Wave Sweeping the Plaza?
So you think it's fair to try and further sanitize the richest and safest parts of town, to push even more crime into the poorest and most dangerous parts? I don't see that as the issue. I do not believe there is a set number of crimes that will happen and we can push those crimes out of one area ...

Re: Quarantine Walmart II
Walmart(and many places like it, but for this case, I'll just say Walmart, for the sake of ease) depends on two major abnormal conditions for its success: cheap land and cheap labor, the former being far more important, as it takes care of the latter. I would think the land issue would then hold tr...

Re: Quarantine Walmart II
This thread is a perfect example why this board needs an off-topic or bar room. Whether you want to protest Walmart or not is your own business but the subject matter has nothing to do with KC. In fact, I hate to see this kind of discussion because it tends to paint this board in a certain light w...

You're right, I don't usually shop at places that assume I'm a criminal. It's offensive and unnecessary. About as offensive and unnecessary as the invasion of privacy that you're advocating. The collection of personal data, followed by the abuse of it, is long and proud tradition. You can attack me...

Eventually gas is going to go south on us, gas companies are raising prices when we have the most excess oil we'eve ever had, imagine what will happen when gas supplies will go down. Huh? Oil is a commodity, if it was produced in excess of supply, prices would fall. Oil companies do not control p...
