Re: Slovenia for 7 nights

I spent some time in Ljubljana a decade ago and the city center was quite nice. It surprised me with the number of young people (college age) in the city. The bicycling culture was starting to compare to Amsterdam. There were cycling facilities everywhere. It was a great visit. https://c1.staticflic...

Re: Strongtown: Suggestions for KC's downtown streets

I went to the Peter Kageyama event in OP. His talk was very good. In some ways, relating to the StrongTown message of focusing on small initiatives that have high relative return. "Return" in his talk was social, not monetary, but they go hand-in-hand. The Chuck talk looked like a good one...

Here is your chance to give praise or throw tomatoes at Mr. Marohn. He is speaking as part of the KC Library series on January 30th. https://www.strongtowns.org/eventspage/2018/1/30/kansas-city-mo On the same night, Peter Kageyama is speaking in Overland Park. http://www.fortheloveofcities.com/in-t...

Too much info to digest in one meeting. The historic data and dialog probably deserves its own dedicated time.

Re: Westport

Sounds like the 2/1 meeting is the public meeting for the Westport Dev. plan.

& the 2/6 meeting is the public meeting led by HKC to present the historic survey results.

I was digging around and stumbled onto this thread and this development. It looks like it stalled out around 2005 and never restarted.

it's all very nice inside, but doesn't make up for the horrendous ground-floor experience. If we want to be a great city, we cannot keep allowing this to happen. A city is not just about "density". Allowing what to happen? Making the ground floor use better would theoretically increase de...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

While I agree with your assessment of most nursing care facilities, I believe this development will be 'luxury senior living,' rather than a nursing home or maybe even assisted living. A lot of wealthy seniors live in South Plaza condos or places like the Walnuts, and I have a feeling this will be ...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

^Careful, chingon might call you out for stereotyping. The building comes with a large garage, won't be surprising if most drive the two blocks to Plaza. Forget it. 99% of people that live in nursing care facilities are not able to walk a block. I am not stereotyping. I have designed sites for them...

Wasn't sure where to put this one....I guess the Westport is close enough. Anyone know why this building is currently being demoed? This city is getting knocked down faster than it is being built up. https://goo.gl/maps/fodpk8xnQF32 Photo taken this morning... https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4683/241...

Re: Martini Corner near 31st/Gilham

Gilham Road curves to the east at 34th Street, then heads north in an alignment on Cherry for three blocks, to 31st, before heading back west in front of El Torreon. Historically, it continued north to 25th Street and then curved into Pershing. When the flatter alignment was established on Locust f...

Re: West 39th Street Apartments

don't fight this project because of aesthetics. if you want better, lobby for design guidelines (which we clearly don't have) or get a meeting with the developer. why give opponents the ammunition when you won't get what you want with internet chatter? taking the long view, things are improving and...

Related: Here is the other project on the same TIF application at 3260 Main. It suffers that same problem, though not quite as bad because the larger lot reduces the dominance of the drive aprons. (click image to see better detail)

Why don't we force these project to have a better relationship to the public realm? I am all for the density, but jeez...this thing is bad. It is all drive aprons and a tiny lobby. How hateful! (click image to see better detail)
