How is it encouraging sprawl? That area is hardly at the edge of the metro area. Immediately to the west (on the other side of 435) are areas that have been underdeveloped for decades.flyingember wrote:not sure I like this
Nobody will walk. Village West is designed for automobiles and a look at Google Maps shows that while one could walk, it's not a very walkable environment.
Re: Downtown Mission/ The Gateway
What's the point? How is this any different than most 1980's suburban developments? The parking lot is just in a different location. Density. Condos/apartments as part of the development. The attempt to do something different than a "1980s suburban development". Yes, Walmart being part of...

They also seem to be now constructing a proper entrance drive just off 435 and State Avenue. The other entrance they've been using is maybe a temporary one anyway.

Re: Guess the suburb!
I read an article years ago that lakes (say Shawnee Mission Park size) were proposed in the 1960s in the area of what is now Indian Creek parkway and College. They supposedly were never built partially over fear of "them" coming from the inner city to Leawood to use such lakes. The small p...

Yeah, when I first stumbled upon that area in 1985 (having just moved to Mission), I was kind of impressed by the historic aspect of it. They could have given it a facelift and kept it viable for years (like the Prairie Village shops). Instead, a very ugly building was erected.

Build a Walmart and they will come?
I feel sorry for Roeland Park though. It will need money and luck to successfully weather the transition.

They probably got one aspect correct: crime seems to be far, far worse in KC 30 years from now. We've got a good start now with the homicide rate this year.

Like I said, I don't see anything that says "KC" in that shot from the movie. But very good CGI.

"The new movie, Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, and Jeff Daniels is partially set in a futuristic, dystopian Kansas City." Unfortunately, it is a rather generic "sci-fi big city of the future". Could have been Chicago or anywhere. They didn't bot...

As I mentioned in another thread, the Cinemark on the Plaza closed this weekend too, supposedly for renovations. A coincidence I assume.KCMax wrote:Closed for a month for renovations. When they return they'll have full dine-in service.

Are they remodeling? Or is something else going on? Every time I was there it seemed like they were keeping it maintained nicely.

The Dillard's building has been gone for months. Originally some kind of multi-tenant building was intended for the space. Perhaps now they think Costco would be a better fit. It seems there would be enough space; that Dillard's was quite big.aknowledgeableperson wrote:take out the Dillard's building and it might work.

Was out at The Legends this week. Forumers would be happy to know that Bryant's (where I had lunch) was doing a whopping business while Famous Dave's had nary a car in its lot. I suspect the newness has worn off and people are returning to their favorite local bbq restaurants. Unfortunately, the lu...

Anyone know what's the latest out there? Looks like they did no construction this year. You'd think they could at least erect a nice sign so visitors would know where to enter the place (more than once I've had people tell me they didn't see the actual entrance to it at first).

Ah, hating Johnson County. An annual sport in these parts. Yes, it would be better if the state line didn't exist. But there will always be areas of a metro (ANY metro) that think they are inherently superior to others. I wouldn't paint all of the county with the same brush, though. I doubt if someo...

So I just took a look at the master site plan. Interesting layout but what exactly is this "museum" again? Is it really going to be some regional draw that will want to make people stay and shop in the Xburbs? I see a theater/cinema is part of the plan but really? In such close proximity ...
