What a nightmare. If it ever gets done it will likely be a far more scaled down project.

Re: Merriam Village: senior living and big box?
I'd hardly see this as a sign of resurrection - the actual retail buildings up on the hill will still sit there empty. But good to see Jack in the Box is expanding further.

Re: Cerner still committed to Bannister site
One of the reasons Bannister Mall failed is because the neighborhood around it aren't very dense, and there is a lot of undeveloped land still in that part of the city. The fact that they are making the same mistake over again, and not adding residential, is just foolish. They should be adding res...

According to Google Maps it is just east of Nieman near the soccer complex. I think there is a new, small strip center there with a yogurt place as well.

Interesting, my impression was higher concept than what you described, but I believe it. Alan wasn't/isn't a Portlandian and wasn't really behind the concept, just consulting chef getting the restaurant operation off the ground. It's hard for me to understand a lot of things about that part of the...

Re: Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort
Schlitterbahn will spend $5M for expansion of Kansas City, Kan., water park $5 million here, $5 million there... at this pace it'll take another 20 years for the whole thing to be finished. I'm really wanting them to build what they originally promised, but it just seems like they keep whittling aw...

Re: Metcalf Redevelopment
So they want tax subsidies to build one new Hy-vee and abandon two Hy-vee's? Surely OP isn't stupid enough to go for that. At least the new store would be benefiting an older area of O.P. (95th and Antioch). The center across from the mall where the Hy-Vee is now has been in flux for some time. Wh...

Nope. That location in the 1980s was a Dahl's Food store (Hy-Vee tore down the building). Schnuck's was over on Metcalf where Micro Center and Michael's are now.KC0KEK wrote: Wasn't the 91st and Metcalf store originally a Schnucks?

Re: Has the area around Oak Park Mall finally Had It?
If funny you mention that. A few years ago a developer wanted to build some town houses in western Shawnee and the neighbors opposed it because they were afraid western Shawnee would start to look like 75th and Quivira. To them that is a ghetto. Compared to large areas of Johnson County, it is kind ...

Re: Downtown Mission/ The Gateway
No one is going to build another large multiplex theater anywhere near the Plaza or the Mission Gateway. Sounds like the one in Mission is going to be one of these smaller "dinner and a movie" deals (that has failed TWICE at Zona Rosa). MAYBE AMC could do a better job running one of those,...

http://www.kansascity.com/2010/12/03/2495972/mission-gateway-plan-adds-two.html Ah, the hotel and office towers would be built in a later phase. Or possibly never. It could end up just being a shopping center with an aquarium and a multiplex. Then again, NIMBYs could kill the towers for being too h...

Per biz journal this afternoon: Developer has new local partners and new renderings from Slaggie Architects.
Hmmm. Seems pretty ambitious now, and a lot more "urban" than before. Still beats an empty lot or another Walmart Super Center.

Re: ELEPHANTS walking in the streets downtown! (by the Sprint Center)
The elephant walk always results in a nice photo in the local newspaper, and free publicity. I was at Crown Center in 1975 and saw a similar sight: http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0cf08b3127ccefbefc4e21b4400000030O00EbMmrVs3YsQe3nwI/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ http://im1.shutterfly...

A cross between "Corporate" Woods and Executive "Hills". Anyway, when these office complexes were first thought of (late 60's very early 70's) , designed, and the first shoveled there wasn't much around but nature and a newly built highway. Oak Park Mall was build on farmland s...

Cought the last 2/3 or so of this on KCPT last night. Seemed impressively put together and actually had a pretty in-depth and progressive summation on suburban growth patterns in general. Would have thought it was written by some of the folks on here. KCPT is airing it again Sunday 10/24 at 4:00.
