Re: I'm Dreaming of a Good Old-Fashioned Diner Downtown

OK, Chrizow, don't go raiding the RiverMarket for businesses to prop up the Crossroads.

You have to go out there and do it the old fashioned way, by raiding Overland Park and Lee's Summit for desirable entrepeneurs.

Re: State of the Downtown condo market

If it's tangible, it's sold and/or purchased, and it is a result of human industry it would seem to be appropriately termed "product".  In the real estate industry the term is commonly used, whether housing or commercial properties are being discussed.  Perhaps most commonly by the develop...

Re: River Market - KC Southern Railyard Apartments

Just had a business reporter share with me that the Morgan Group closed on the purchase of the western 2/3 of the KCS Railyard on Friday.

Re: State of the Downtown condo market

I don't know about you all, but I've been living downtown for about six years now. They've been struggling ever since I moved to KC in 2001 to fill condominiums. Rents certainly seem to be up with the housing market dropping ass, but with so many lofts for rent I believe it gives the downtown condo...

Re: River Market - KC Southern Railyard Apartments

I've been trying to track this project closely.  It has gone very, very quite for about 30 days.
Someone close to the project, said Friday, that it looks very good, but refused any detail.

Re: Grinders

Stretch, I was at Grinders last night (friday).  WTF did you say to the waitresses?  They were ON IT! I've most always been fine with the service I get from your crew, but they were working machines.  It was almost bizarre.  Wasn't at the bar to see if food prep was equally inspired.  My girlfriend ...

Re: I'm Dreaming of a Good Old-Fashioned Diner Downtown

Moderne, wasn't that the Dixon Inn at that location?  Or was that the name of the hotel there?

Anyway, I ate there many late/early breakfasts a few lifetimes ago.

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??

Bella and Company relocated to Weston, Mo.  They sublet the space to a couple of friends who have a graphic design company, but for only the remaining months of their lease (7-8 months?). This building and a few others on Delaware have recently changed hands and the plans are to convert the building...

Re: Off beaten path dive bars

Sorry, Karen's........  It was Jodies Log Cabin in the 70's.  It's been around since the 30's so maybe a few other historic names can be found. They've added on a pool room, but they have managed to not ruin the place.  Every piece of life floats thru this little shack.  Mostly lower to middle wage ...

Re: Stretch on P&L and Parking

Butt_Breath you are a prickly sort.  That said, the parking patrol is a public nuisance.  It's not just hummer driving property owners that get gouged by these typically power-tripped fat-assed public-paid bandits.  It's the people from all over  the metro and visitors to the city that are nailed by...

Off beaten path dive bars

The debate about Grinders causes me to think about favorite dive bars that are off the radar.

My vote goes to Helen's Log Cabin at about 5800 St. John.

I'm talking places that anyone can walk in to.  Don't want to get anyone killed here.

Re: Baby Doe's Matchless Mine Restaurant

KC-Vino; Baby Doe's did in fact start sliding down the hillside.  It was facing downtown on the east edge of the hill north of the Cambridge Circle exit.  Once it started moving, it was condemned, torn down and all traces removed.  Don't know about mob connections.  Believe it was a chain, started i...

Ernesto and Eddie are your owners/barkeeps.  Good guys. (former Cap Grille)
The bruschetta assortment is a deal and a great share food.
Haven't tried other menu items.

Re: New Year's Resolutions?

They tell me the "easiest way" is meth and cigarettes. My approach was to eat one-half the previous volume of food, and to take walks thru downtown as often as I could, from 3 to 6 times a week.  (lots to see, obviously). I just ate too much.  I now split meals out with someone, or I take ...
