Re: Why did you move from KCMO to a suburb?
interesting, i appreciate the insight from urban-minded suburban dwellers! that's crazy about homeless people sleeping on porches in volker, i have never heard of such a thing. that would be pretty unsettling indeed. One day my wife baked a cake to take to a party but it turned out they already had...

Stop by Vedauwoo after you go through Cheyenne, just before you get to Laramie. http://www.wyomingtourism.org/overview/Vedauwoo-Recreation/32151 There's a really good Vietnamese restaurant in Cheyenne. In fact, it's the only good food in the city (I grew up there). Look it up on yelp, I forget the n...

Re: Why did you move from KCMO to a suburb?
I still don't get why, instead of fretting about schools, people don't just buy one of the hundreds of thousands of cheaper, nicer houses in the city and then PLAN ON PAYING TUITION. Like, if you have 1 kid, buy a house that costs 20K less. If you have 2, 40K less. Etc. It's not hard to work out ho...

Re: Why did you move from KCMO to a suburb?
Until recently my wife and I were thinking hard about making the move from Volker to NE Johnson County but, lucky for us, my oldest boy won the lottery at Academie Lafayette so we’ll be staying in the area. A lot of my friends who want to stay in urban KCMO suck it up and send their kids to private...

I toured all the "New Urban" communities in the area and like Celebration the most. But the best Old Urban area that I saw was Winter Park.

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??
There were some planning efforts made a decade ago, with the intention of seeing developed exactly what you describe, smh, with perhaps garage going underground and housing (condos, in that era) on top. Bet they (the city) would listen closely if some credible entity came in with equity strong enou...

Re: Why did you move from KCMO to a suburb?
That's right, kids: Prairie Village might seem cool at first, but it is a gateway drug. That's an awesome take on the situation. Until recently my wife and I were thinking hard about making the move from Volker to NE Johnson County but, lucky for us, my oldest boy won the lottery at Academie Lafaye...

Re: Springfield Cashew Chicken
Once upon a time, my wife, who grew up in Springfield, ate at a Chinese restaurant in St. Louis. She ordered cashew chicken (the only thing she’ll eat at a Chinese restaurant) and discovered what the rest of the world now knows. Cashew chicken not made in Springfield is disgusting. She has yet to fi...

Re: Aixois opening in Commerce Arcade
I work in the building. I'll probably hit it up for breakfast and/or coffee a lot. Lunch too. I'm not really a huge fan of the lunch options within walking distance of my office. I prefer the westside/crossroads establishments but that requires a car trip so I often just pack a lunch and eat in the ...

Retail Strip on NE corner of Westport Rd and State Line
The old Scott's Fitness place. I drove by today and saw construction workers inside. Anyone know what's going on?
It's kind of a weird place but I could imagine it being cool if done right.

Re: Adventurous Eating in KC
I have, and continue to shop at all the grocers in the RM. 20 years ago, when they first started opening, I didn't have a clue what the asian products were that colorfully lined the shelves and confused my nose. Some wonderful discoveries have come from these shops. In the NE hood, I have eaten at ...

Adventurous Eating in KC
I just listened to an interview of Tyler Cowen, author of “An Economist Gets Lunch,” and now I feel inspired to seek out authentically ethnic restaurants and grocery stores. Does anyone here regularly shop at any of the ethnic grocery stores in the River market area? Also, there appears to be some e...

As a structural engineer working downtown, this is a the reason I moved to KC from Stl. More big name firms here and more opportunities in engineering.

Re: Urbanism, architecture, etc.
Are liberals defending conservative principles, and are conservatives defending liberal principles when it comes to land-use policies? That's what Matthew Yglesias argues in his new book "The Rent is Too Damn High". He argues liberals are betraying their liberal principles when they prote...

Hmm. Hard to go to any coffee shop down there other than Mud Pie-- prob my favorite coffee house of all time. Agreed. I considered myself blessed by the gods above to live within walking distance of Mud Pie. It’s a great place for coffee, a great place for sweets (who knew I would love vegan cupcak...

Re: Why don't young Americans buy cars?
I’m 31. I feel like I bridge the generations a bit on this question. I still hang out with friends in real life but also use social media on my iphone a fair amount. I don’t drive a hybrid, I drive a Mazda5 (three kids). I can see the appeal of a joy ride through Brookside but would prefer to do it ...

Drove by a couple times over the weekend and was completely unimpressed - looks like a lawn party in the middle of a parking lot for Dead Heads. Stepped in yesterday after work. They sell 100% Kona coffee, Medium and Dark Roast. That's certainly different. Dead Head art for sale downstairs and up. ...

Re: Local Pig
I finally got away from trying all the sausages and got myself a pork chop last night (because they were out of steaks ), and I concur. That has to have been just about the best damn pork chop I have ever had. Certainly the best I've ever cooked, and I even overdid it just a hair. Even so, it ...
