Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...

Rumors out that Google may buy up Surewest to help expedite resolving rights issues. Surewest already has fiber to the home in KC area. http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Google-Fiber-Runs-Face-First-Into-Bureaucracy-118049 Others think Google may entirely pull the plug on the KC project... http://w...

Re: SXSW 2012

As you're probably aware, SxSW is not much about promoting unsigned bands anymore and is more about promoting releases of major labels. Is still an industry showcase either way, but they need to figure out how to separate the two and give the unsigned a higher profile as the original intent of the e...

At that rate, homeowners paying property tax in the district should be given free annual bus/streetcar passes.

Re: Private Car Share

hertz and enterprise also offer car-sharing services. doesn't have to just be zipcar downtown. i was just approved for a membership. my zipcard should arrive soon! I think Hertz and Enteprise require drivers over 25. ZipCar is 18, which is probably why they are mostly based around college campuses....

Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...

If that step in the process isn't even pegged down yet, sounds like they are way behind. The approach they are taking sounds very hodge podge, not a well planned project that has a Design signed off by all players before going to Build. Other ISPs who have built infrastructure are wondering if Googl...

Re: Pierponts Bar

Yeah, Pierpont's is one of the few places that appear to have well trained servers. Most places, even dining places these days don't even know to serve plates from the left and pickup from the right. Or they push the menu on you before asking if you'd like to first start with cocktail. Or may not ho...

Re: Pierponts Bar

Was looking at tripadvisor.com the other day and was disappointed to see that Capital Grille was the top rated restaurant in KC with Pierpont's ranking 11th for steakhouses. Is no surprising 'the masses' go for the chains but Pierpont's is really the only 'steakhouse' I prefer in KC. There are many ...

Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...

Ah, OK I just checked old articles and they do say Google is targeting Q1 2012, but several sources say that signups were supposed to start end of 2011. Any sign of this?

You'd think if it's coming very soon, it would leak out.

Re: OFFICIAL - Performing Arts Center construction

I think the south side lawn would look good with a massive colorful sculpture along the lines of the Chicago Civic Center Picasso. ] I like it but would draw attention away from the PAC building. How about a waterfall that hides the front face of the garage and you have to drive through the water t...

Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...

Any indication on Google's real progress? They expected to have the first sites up and running end of last year to early 2012 but there is no sign (at least in the media) that anything will rollout soon. Anyone have an inside to maybe share in the rumor forum on dates we'll actually see someone have...

Re: Kansas City optimism

My brother lived in KC (River Market) in late 90s to 2002 then went to NYC. Lived in Philly and Austin before KC. He visited this weekend and had a great time. Visited Nelson expansion, PAC (was wowed by both), P&L (not for him but agreed with me every city should have a touristy district, was very ...

Re: Urbanism, architecture, etc.

Can't really trust Walkscore. Before all the downtown development, 12th/Main scored 91. A few years later.. after P&L, grocery, movie theatre, bowling, a bit more retail, etc, the Walkscore improved by only one point to 92. Westport area scores a 95.

Re: Why Can't the West Bottoms Be Redeveloped....?

Would rather see more focus on infill development in Xroads and River Market before the City focuses on WB but any downtown focus is good, even if dispersed.

Re: Sulzberger: A Vegetarian's Struggle for Sustenance in KC

However parts of upstate NY have foodie cultures that embrace local sources. The Ozarks tend to be content with packaged foods and fast food restaurants - the saltier the better. Northern MO has a bit more tendency to embrace local foods than S MO. The whole vegan thing though is a bizarre cult. If ...

Re: Why Can't the West Bottoms Be Redeveloped....?

For this reason WB should be attractive to artists who fear they would be priced/taxed out of their home/gallery as what happened in Xroads for some. WB will probably have makeshift individually created 'live in your workspace' housing for a while. It's true industrial loft living. While I'd like to...

The faster than light claim didn't hold up. There were apparently equipment problems. This is why there needs to be several layers of peer review before such claims make it out to mass media.
