Re: San Francisco Pictures

Incidentally, although it does take an hour, I've taken that Caltrain ride before and it's not too bad. But if I lived in Palo Alto it's probably long enough that I wouldn't regularly head into SF unless my job was there (in which case I wouldn't live in Palo Alto, so)

Re: San Francisco Pictures

The more I push back against this comparison the more it feels like I'm defending Palo Alto as a place to live, so agree to disagree that commuting by train is "exactly the same" as commuting by car even if the trips are comparable length (by car, PA to SF is half as long as Topeka to KC, unless tra...

Re: San Francisco Pictures

I would say that is a pretty poor comparison for a whole lot of reasons, not the least of which being that the raw distance between Palo Alto and San Francisco is half what it is between KC and Topeka.

Re: San Francisco Pictures

I have a friend about to move out of Palo Alto and if you ask him it's not a minute too soon. Crushingly expensive and you don't actually get much for your money in terms of cultural amenities (unless you count proximity to San Francisco and its amenities). There are essentially no bars and the rest...

Re: Gay marriage

No reason to oppose it is only part of the equation though. If there's no real demand for it, there certainly isn't going to be any movement among state legislatures to rewrite the laws. Could try to do it through a court challenge (to get standing I suppose you'd have to try to get a marriage lice...

Re: Gay marriage

"The principle of stare decisis is meant to ensure that there is uniformity on how cases are decided." Stare decisis basically only applies once a state or the US Supreme Court decides on an issue. My reference of course was to decisions made by the lower courts on the various issues that might be ...

Re: Gay marriage

I mean before you get into the weeds about what the problems are and how to solve them you have to identify some constituency that actually wants it. Is there really a big movement for polygamy in this country? There's no specific movement for polygamy that I'm aware of. I just can't identify any r...

Re: Politics

I just think the specific comparison of "Obama is a Muslim" to "Trump was installed by the Russians" is a false equivalency. The topics are different, the goal is to use an item of moral or ethical importance for a group of people to get them against a political opponent. and in that sense, they ar...

Re: Politics

Agree that everybody probably believes that they're relying on "established facts," but that doesn't mean it's impossible to step back and evaluate what you believe in and why. Will still inevitably be tinged by your biases, but being aware of that can help you control for it to at least some extent...

Re: Politics

"One side believes insane conspiracy theories, the other side believe established facts -- they're both crazy!" is definitely a false equivalency. I'm not gonna get into a philosophical debate about "objective reality," and I do agree with you that "alternative facts" and the inability/refusal to ag...

Re: Politics

Well, a fair few of their constituents thought Obama was a muslim installed by Saudis who wanted to destroy America. Now, a fair few democratic constituents think Trump is a nazi installed by Russians who wants to destroy America. My optimistic side likes to think we'll get through this, but the pe...

Re: Politics

This plan was disrupted early on by his erratic and often contradictory policy pronouncements, but as it's become clear that he neither knows nor cares what's in a bill as long as he can sign it and rack up a win, they should get back on track. Trump has no political ideology. It appears to be some...

Re: Patriot Highway

If it's more expensive and difficult in 10-15 years, it's less likely to happen then. If you're against it happening in general, you should just be against doing it, period. Suburban sprawl isn't some inevitable force of nature, it's an economic decision, and one thing KC doesn't need is yet more ro...

Re: Politics

Although a large number of self-identified Republicans still support him, recent polls suggest his base (that is, blue collar white men) might be starting to peel away (and anecdotally I've talked to some one time supporters who no longer like him, call him an idiot, etc). But Trump's base doesn't p...

Re: Politics

Watergate was before my time, but something you never hear people talk about anymore is that most Republicans apparently stuck by Nixon well into the scandal and a majority of Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee voted against every count of impeachment. So I wouldn't count on Republicans tu...

Re: KC to STL Hyperloop

Those cost estimates could go up 500% and it would still be less than HSR. I'm confident that those estimates will not hold up either, that's why they are called estimates. Musk is not directly involved with Hyperloop One. And yet if the numbers are made up in the first place and "500%" is just an ...
