Re: Strongtown: Suggestions for KC's downtown streets

He spoke more along the lines of: “living a lowdensity suburban lifestyle is only possible if you have the means to afford a number of added expenses like cars. The urban poor currently live meager lifestyles in neighborhoods where they can walk or take a bus to work/school/Store . And that the urb...

Re: Hotel Bravo- 17th and Wyandotte

If the convention hotel next door has 1000 attendees of a convention or show, they're positioning themselves to be where the guests of honor can stay. Seems like such a narrow market and we already have so many hotels for high end business travelers (Loews, 21C, Crossroads, President, Ambassador, I...

Re: Hotel Bravo- 17th and Wyandotte

I really hate the traditional hotel room... two beds all in one room, bathroom, closet. I really think people want more than that now, especially families. They want living space. Places like Hyatt House with living rooms, kitchens and separate bedroom for parents/children should/will be the new nor...

Re: Strongtown: Suggestions for KC's downtown streets

We're seeing increased evidence of people of means moving into urban areas and pricing out existing residents who are then forced to seek housing in the burbs...basically. In many ways, I think this is a positive progression. Traditionally in our city, the core has held the unbalanced burden of car...

It looked like the first exterior panels were being installed on the first floor today when I walked by. They were dark grey precast with modular angles.

Affordable Housing

There is beginning to be a stronger demand for affordable housing in the city. It will be a major topic in the upcoming mayoral election and candidates will be pushing plans to provide it. Unfortunately, TIF will be a major target. This is bad because this program has been instrumental to revitalizi...

Re: Fixing the KC Zoo (ongoing)

They have every right to be "pretty like that." Any bi-state tax should benefit both states. As I recall, previous attempts have failed because the plan was to funnel all of the money collected in Kansas into projects that were all in Missouri. It's not like most of the the Missouri side wold have ...

Re: Fixing the KC Zoo (ongoing)

^ I’d guess that JOCO leaders would require funds go to their area too, like for the Deanna Rose Farmstead. They’re petty like that.

The two portions of garage don't actually connect. Walnut entrance goes below grade, the other above grade.
That doesn’t make any sense. Why would they not make one garage that goes both down to below grade and up for above grade portion?

Re: 1800 Walnut

It looks like it would have more street activation than Two Light. And even with all the frontages dedicated to nothing more than a facade for the parking garage, walking around these parts of Two Light has never struck me as "dead". 2 Light is basically fronted by the P&L District. I guess, techni...

Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

I think the larger benefit even than the synergy with the PAC (which is a big plus) is the hundreds of students that would be riding streetcar everyday from one campus to another. Students who would stop on Main St to grab lunch or coffee or retail. Having the campus DT is the only location that wou...

Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

Why would a small, private school sell land to UMKC when they (Rockhurst) are also burdened with the same lack of available land? Small private colleges like Rockhurst typically have significant endowments and operating budgets and higher tuition than larger public universities. That doesn't mean t...

Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

Moving Rockhurst out of the area won't add 10k students to UMKC. Those kids won't transfer because Rockhust moved. Correct. I looked up the Rockhurst enrollment. They only have about 3k students. So, wouldn’t increase UMKC numbers even if everyone transferred. It would provide additional facilities...

Why isn't there any reason for two colleges to be on top of each other?
Because UMKC having an additional 10k students could make a huge difference for programs, athletics and national recognition. I’d love to see the largest KC university be similar to Louisville or Cindy.

Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

I’d love to see a combined UMKC/Rockhurst campus. Use the funds to buy them out and let them build a new suburban Rockhurst. Would give plent of land for expansion, immediate new facilities and bridge Troost. No reason for two colleges right on top of each other.
