Re: Affordable Housing

The fastest way to create affordable housing is to renovate existing vacant houses that are not too far gone. I don't know what the current count is, but the last I heard was that were up to 14,000 vacant houses in KCMO. Some are owned by the Land Bank. Renovating an existing vacant house is often ...

Re: Big New STL Apartment Building

I agree. I hated the idea they were demolishing an existing, functional building when there are still surface lots around the area. It is an attractive older building as well.

Re: Affordable Housing

Things need to change. Depending on the city, or neighborhood, anywhere from 40-50 percent of adults now live alone in cities. This fact alone can create housing scarcity, and the demand for places to live--for everyone. It puts a lot of pressure on low-income families because they are competing aga...

Re: Strongtown: Suggestions for KC's downtown streets

Matt asked about Kansas City’s large amounts of lowdensity suburbs/farm fields. Response:Kansas cities and other cities don’t talk about deannexation but it’s an important conversation that will need to be had. First of all, let me say I have stated several times on this forum that KCMO has annexed...

I recently saw a statistic that in some neighborhoods east of Troost to the Blue River, up to 20 percent of households don't own a car. It might have been on FlatlandKC.org.

I find it curious that Historic KC raises hell over the Westport bank building, yet no similar reaction over demolishing the majority of the Lyric building.

Re: PortKC launches new inland port development

I'm guessing that the renewed need for river barge traffic has something to do with the fact that 40 percent of American grain (mostly grown in the Midwest) is sent overseas now. A large amount of that is probably shipped out from New Orleans or Houston. Shipping grain from the Midwest using the Mis...

Re: New Downtown YMCA

I find this whole plan frustrating. It makes zero sense to me to demolish an existing auditorium / performance space for a YMCA in a new building re-using only the facade. One can build a new building on any number of surface lots downtown. The logical thing to me would have been for DST to donate t...

Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

This whole debacle reminds me of how UMKC School of Law once had a plan to buy and convert the old Federal Courthouse (811 Grand) that had all of the lush courtrooms, research library and study rooms and move the school there. They eventually abandoned the plan. If I recall, that plan was also done...

UMKC still has over half a dozen surface parking lots and several areas of underdeveloped open space. There is plenty of room to build without demolition.
The problem is that when they build on parking lots, they have to replace the parking.
