Re: 45th, Rockhill & W Gilham

I drive through this intersection a lot going south on Gillham/Rockhill. While I haven't seen any numbers from traffic counts, I'm guessing it's set up the way it is because the majority of traffic travels north/south along Gillham/Rockhill, and the point is to keep that moving, especially with the ...

Re: For transit, plastic seats good, fabric seats bad?

I don't need a bacteria test to answer your question. Yes, plastic seats good, fabric seats bad. Ever sat in a wet bus seat b/c it was fabric and you couldn't tell by quickly looking that it was wet? That's when you hope the bus window leaks so you can at least have a good idea where the dampness ca...

Re: Polsinelli Shughart HQ @ 47th/Broadway

It worked with Blackwell Sanders.  They wanted to tear down the park place apartments (now a marriott) which was a terrible plan very similar to this one.  Instead they built up a blightend high profile block of the plaza area at the Library location. KC kept and restored an existing viable structu...

Re: Polsinelli Shughart HQ @ 47th/Broadway

I think a lot of people think the "future plans for 'saving' the Plaza" are embedded in the "the Plaza Urban Design Development Plan adopted by the city in 1989 [that] specifically recommended no zoning changes to the Plaza." (quote from today's Star article) There is a plan that...

Re: Polsinelli Shughart HQ @ 47th/Broadway

My only problem with this development now is I don't get why viable structures have to be torn down to make way for new structures in a city with so many underused or vacant lots or properties.  I personally think the plaza needs more office development.  The office project is fine. Interesting num...

Apparently the hearing lasted over 6 hours....!

City Plan Commission voted 3-2 against the plan. Next step for Highwoods would be for a council member to introduce an ordinance.

Re: Restaurants you ate out at as a kid

You're thinking of John Lloyd's Pizza Factory. Him and his wife Sherry owned 3 of them and when they got divorced he got that one, Sherry got the one in Holiday Hills shopping center on Parvin Rd. and they sold the third one. I worked for Sherry for awhile over on Parvin Rd. back in '84-'85. Yes! T...

Re: Restaurants you ate out at as a kid

Love this thread. when i was a kid i would eat pizza, hamburgers (ketchup and pickle only), bologna sandwiches, and junk food.  that's about it. I ate my hamburgers plain with just salt, and ham sandwiches instead of bologna, but otherwise I was exactly the same as a kid. Probably limited my family'...

Anyone know of a way to get in the mall prior to demolition (preferably legally)?  Apparently that was possible prior to the demolition of Bannister Mall. I'd like to see some last photos of it inside & out. I would LOVE to get inside one last time. I grew up in Gladstone so spent a lot of time...

Thank you! I was wondering why Subway on Broadway had such a crazy line today. I expected it to be slower b/c of people taking time off work between Christmas and New Year's so was really surprised!

Re: Polsinelli Shuhart HQ @ 47th/Broadway

Maybe the firm just needs to build its College Blvd type building on College Blvd and move its employees there. Amen. Even if they build this hideousness on the Plaza, in less than a decade they'll probably be playing the incentives game anyway, so go before they create longer lasting effects on th...

Re: Polsinelli Shuhart HQ @ 47th/Broadway

They set the tone with their design. Did they try to work with the surroundings initially? I would say not so much, judging from the reaction by many to the pictured design.

Tax incentives are not the only valid reason people can have to be worked up about development.

Anybody know where I can find that plaza master plan that specifies where highrises should be located and the height? http://www.kcmo.org/idc/groups/cityplanningdevelopmentdiv/documents/cityplanninganddevelopment/plazaplan.pdf That it? Re: Private Car Share

Yeah, the organizations that provide the service tend to offer different types of vehicles for that very reason. So if you need to haul a sofa and just need a vehicle for an hour to do that, you can. And if the next time you need a car, you're driving to Springfield, you can rent a Prius to get dece...

Re: Private Car Share

Or maybe the groups could work together on their own feasibility study - then would have the data to either entice ZipCar/Hertz/Enterprise or start the city's own. Minneapolis started its own, and now has both HourCar and ZipCar (which came after the nonprofit HourCar was started). http://www.hourca...

Re: Private Car Share

I went a couple of years without a car and when I bought one again, I paid a premium for insurance because I was previously uninsured. I had figured that since I didn't have a car, I didn't need insurance, but the insurance company disagreed. Did you keep insurance during your carless years? Nope. ...

Re: Private Car Share

Didn't realize Hertz was starting their service at Mizzou. That's good news. Enterprise also has a carsharing program (WeCar) in St. Louis, and I think they recently started it in Nashville. It would be nice if we could convince either them or Hertz to start here if ZipCar won't. California is worki...
