Re: Top City Slogans and Nicknames
I read a publication once that called Kansas City the "Jewel of the Prairie." I've not seen a reference to that anywhere else since then.

Re: Thousands turn out for St. Pat's Parade
My mother called me from Ohio yesterday and asked me about something she saw in their newspaper. "Was there some sort of gunfight at a St. Patrick's Day parade in Kansas City?" I sighed, then she said "It seems like every time Kansas City is in the national news it's about crime.&qu...

Looking at the store locators on their websites, I found:
CVS: 19 stores in the metro
Osco: 52 stores

Re: CVS to acquire all Osco Drug Stores
I lived in Ohio until 2001. CVS had been there for a long time; they were all over the place. I never thought their stores were anything special. When I moved to Kansas City in '01 I thought it was cool that Oscos had liquor stores. Based on what I've seen at other CVS stores I wouldn't expect any o...

How can we get this in Kansas City? I've used it when in Denver visiting friends, and I see it's also available in St. Louis. Really cool. It sure beats Blockbuster for price on new releases. Maybe someone wants to go in on it with me as a franchise opportunity?? Oh wait, I forgot....I'm just a poor...

Re: KC Gas Prices Soar
The following link was posted by a forum user at kcgasprices.com. The guy who wrote the stuff in the article seems to be a little paranoid, but when you look at his references (college professors, bank representatives, and presidential advisors) it becomes a little scary. http://www.lifeaftertheoilc...

True, and I certainly don't think anyone was trying to argue a preference for communism over capitalism, or start a debate over the two.

Re: Blue Ridge Mall is unnecessarily wasting away...
As long as we're talking about capitalism and sprawl, we should also notice the irony here. Blue Ridge Mall was city's first enclosed shopping, and as such was at the forefront of the suburbanization that killed downtown retail. As the suburbanization pushed further out, Blue Ridge was killed b...

Re: Blue Ridge Mall is unnecessarily wasting away...
Ahh, capitalism. Survival of the fittest. Wal-Mart is the fittest right now, and it'll take over Blue Ridge Mall, because in a capitalist economy progress is the word. Progress says "We MUST find a use for it, otherwise it's outdated and isn't any good." And if they do find a use for it th...

Re: Chicago's Dixie Square Mall
I've recently become somewhat fascinated with the plight of shopping malls. I used to detest what shopping malls stood for, becuase in a way they represent the downfall of "Main Street USA." People used to shop in the CBD of their city until shopping malls drew a lot of buisness from a cit...

Re: North Kansas City
I lived in North Kansas City proper for two years. I spent one of those living in the Sunny Hills (North Kansas City Apartments) complex. After a fire killed a guy and destroyed about six of the units across the street from me, and another person was murdered in a neighboring building several months...

Re: Indian Springs, bulldoze and start over or reuse?
Grid, I agree with you. I think it'd be nice to see the Mall re-developed. I also feel that way about the Bannister and Antioch malls. The whole Indian Springs Mall thing just boggles my mind. It's a nice building on the inside, and I bet no one thought it'd decline like this. Now, unless something'...

Re: Antioch Center redesign
My impression, from the rep that I spoke to in the GNC, is that Sears intends to retain it's current building, while the rest of the mall will likely be demolished. Granted, this guy might not be a great source since he doesn't even work for Sears, but I'm willing to bet word travels fast in a mall ...

Re: Antioch Center redesign
There is now a white banner hanging over the parking garage entrance of the Sears at Antioch Center that reads, "Here to stay...Serving the Northland for 35 years." I talked to the guy that works in the GNC at Antioch this weekend; he said he doesn't think the mall is renewing any leases. ...

Re: Indian Springs, bulldoze and start over or reuse?
I've lived in Kansas City since May of 2001, and I've driven past Indian Springs a number of times. I went in there for the first time on Saturday, because I figured I should see it at least once. Let me tell you, friends, it is a very sad sight. I entered through the mall entrance nearest to where ...

Re: Fireworks laws - why bother?
I grew up in Ohio, where all types of fireworks (except smoke bombs and noisemakers) were outlawed back in the late 80's, when I was about 10. I remember my uncles would drive to Richmond, Indiana to buy fireworks for our barbecue on the 4th. When I moved to Missouri, i felt like I had regained some...
