Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

One interesting behavior worth noting: When we replace the streetcar with "streetcar link" buses, ridership plummets. Lots of ways to read that and we don't have actual data as to why, but just leaving it here to digest. The level of service is identical -- as is the route, except for the ...

Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

I was very much under the impression that a downtown campus was part of the impetus for the streetcar running to UMKC. BAP certainly is not my pick of sites but, it beats the hell out of 63rd street. Not the impetus, but certainly a benefit. With ~300 students on site it would certainly generate so...

Re: 2019 Mayor/Council Elections

Nooooo! I mean, he'd be great and all but with such a high profile he should be running for something at the state or national level. He knows we have a weak mayor system, right?

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

The easy answers for "build more BRT" are (a) we are and (b) we already did in this corridor... in 2005. Of course, they'll respond: "No, REAL BRT!" But everyone knows that BRT creep is a thing and nearly every US BRT project gets watered down to "less than light rail" ...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

The following is a quote from an outside Urban Planner. I guess this is good news for development in that corridor, but honestly, these street car systems are quite bad. The current route takes 16 minutes according to the schedule, for a 2.2 mile route. That's only 8.25 miles per hour. Buses probab...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

From the Biz Journal article... Main Street Rail TDD Chairwoman Jan Marcason said it hoped to find out in January whether the project was selected for the federal funding. Plan B if no Fed funding? With a multi-year authorization (FAST Act) for the Small Starts program, we really just need to wait ...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

Phoenix, Minneapolis, Houston, etc have light rail dedicated in center lanes, we could do that.... you can't tell me it is hard to do just because we are in America. We tried getting voter approval for that -- twice -- and both attempts failed (city hall support for it was tepid, business support n...

I put that in quotes for a reason. The project he's advocating for is not proposed and will probably never be built.

Please create a "good transit" thread then. This one is for the streetcar we're actually building.

Boards from the public meeting: http://kcstreetcar.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/MainStExt_PublicMtg2_BoardsMaps.pdf the more I look at these designs the more I think about how much potential we are about to flush and I'm kinda angry and how shit these designs are... This design reduces traffic la...

The orange are high pressure sodium lighting, They provide a ton of light but are an old technology. If you’re ever curious to see the difference, drive down 75th st in PV ant night and compare those 3000k to those in Roeland Park at 4000k or so. The warmer lights are much more inviting. Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

Will the expansion come with new LED street lighting like the starter line did? Also, will they use the lower Kelvin lighting? That harsh daylight blue LED lighting downtown is really bad. The lights the city installed downtown are around 5000 Kelvin, IIRC, but not sure what they would install else...

Re: 1800 Walnut

I don't want to be too hard on the crossroads, but it's become one of the most NIMBY urban neighborhoods. Bullshit. Again, we've not 'fought' anything like the neighborhoods made up of middle class single-family-homeowners. The last building that caused a serious NIMBY fight was the 18-story DST/Ac...

We have had very little new construction in the Crossroads, but those that have been new were received wel...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

The election board won't release preliminary results (same stance they took for the formation vote last year). We'll know on Wednesday with everyone else.

That being said, with the known number of returns (3,500ish) and who the voters are we can easily estimate a win.

1800 Walnut

No images, but Copaken and an architectural firm have proposed an apartment building at 1800 Walnut. A little over 100 units, consisting of two joined "towers" about 14 stories tall (11 stories of residential atop retail + 2 story garage). Interesting architecture (reminiscent of Aqua towe...
