Re: America's Top Ten Dead Cities: From Detroit to New Orlea
Was in New Orleans for several days last weekend and can say it is no longer dead. Haven't been since 90s and didn't see much then so got a better street experience this time. The French Quarter is hopping if not a little too touristy, especially Bourbon St. (just see it once). The Uptown to Carrolt...

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
It may have been posted earlier but what is cost to build this version of streetcar compared to LRT (per mile). And what are annual maintenance comparisons per mile? I know modern streetcar is less but is it like 1/3 less, 1/2? I do hope they select some form of self-powered cars and not use ugly po...

Re: The News Room, closed
Bummer that it will no longer be a dive bar as it was one of my faves. Westport has turned much better ever since they started to cater to the 25+ midtowner crowd and less as a metro party zone for the college or ghetto crowd. P&L has really helped pull the party crowd out of Westport. A neighbo...

I thought it was OK too, nothing great but a doable option for downtown. I thought much better than Nica's nearby. And agree it's too big of a space. I don't understand the need for huge restaurants in KC. Most large cities 'urbane' eats only have maybe a dozen tables, some less.

Re: port fonda
My first time I thought they tried too hard. Second visit I just thought it was OK, still a good option for Westport. It's a strange tangent from fabricated Mexican with a gringofied interpretation. It's not all out a tangent like SW or TexMex, it's like it came from a parallel universe of Mexico th...

Re: Welcome to the new forum!
As we are not php gods, I very seriously doubt it can be removed without big trouble. -b Search the files in the app directories for the string "times in total" and post several lines of the file around where it occurs. It would be easy to take that out, but I like being able to see how m...

Re: Rankings, lists, and such
KC is apparently one of the highest producers of Android apps... I'm guessing Handmark is probably a major contributor. I'm aware of many others who freelance on their own or at least dabble in it (myself included).

Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...
Here's the original source that WSJ was referring to.. TechAmerica Foundation : Cybercities 2010 Press One stat that stands out, looks like KC has highest % concentration of tech workers (per cap % of total employment) in the Midwest and most major cities in the US. Heavy duty tech cities like Aust...

When I went it was over $30 for two before tip, 2 sandwiches and 2 teas - included starter salad. A bit steep for lunch.
Ingredient is a bit pricey too but no tipping.

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Frankly it's not in effectiveness. I'm fine with bus myself but the reality is to attract riders not accustomed to transit, they want some cutesy rail thing. Let's build a small one and then focus on effective transit, not the image.bahua wrote: How is a streetcar better than a bus on the same route?

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
why, exactly, should we spend tens of millions of dollars on a streetcar circulator downtown? this strikes me as the kind of thing you implement AFTER you have a lightrail and maybe commuter line in place. I would hope that KC doesn't do light rail (LRT) at all. It's not really a good mode for K...

Re: Google picks KCK for ultra fast fiber network
Well the WSJ article is a bit misleading. KC doesn't have 2900 tech companies, it has 2900 companies that have an IT shop or are a tech company. Still not too bad. KC ranks 18th per cap in tech employment, which is not bad for a metro ranked about 30th in pops. The original source also says KC ...

Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...
It's only getting 150Mbps instead of 1Gbps but I'll take it. I wonder if they're using the same equipment/architecture that is planned for KC. It's free the first year but there are pricing rumors of $40 for 50Mbps or $70 for 100Mbps+. I'd go for that.

Re: Nica's 320
Tried it over lunch. Cool place. Food is indeed overly ambitious though worth trying. The menu is a wreck and they need to get rid of the 'build your own' concept. Was laboriously complicated when we sat down and the server attempted to explain. We made a clear gesture of 'WTF!'. I felt trapped...

Re: Make Grand Grand
The downside to Grand for the streetcar is that there are some very large lots owned by corporations not based in KC. Would be difficult to get those developed on a pedestrian scale. Main St has a handful of small lots through Xroads that have much greater chance of pedestrian scale development f...
