Re: KC STAR Layoffs?
Unfortunately, neither the Star nor any other paper has figured out how to make money with their online product. They need to figure it out fast, or there isn't going to be anything left to sell. Yeah, McClatchy is going to earn a mere $200 million from digital this year, so I guess they're a long...

Re: KC STAR Layoffs?
The problem is not with the Star, it's with their owners, McClatchy. That company has enormous, crippling corporate debt and their newspapers are cutting expenses to help the mother ship lower that debt. The Star itself is still making a profit, but not enough to feed the corporate beast. [glow=r...

Re: 2009 Predictions
NEWS, BUSINESS By the first day of spring, two of the big P&L restaurants will have closed. Details emerge that cast the whole Funkhouser/Gloria arrangement in a new and unexpected light. A jaded electorate is too lazy to do much about him other than let him serve out his term, but hope he will...

Re: Kansas City Star -- another round of layoffs
The Pitch noticed that the publisher of the Omaha paper sent out a "pep talk" plagiarized from Zieman at the Star. http://blogs.pitch.com/plog/2008/12/omaha_world-herald_publisher_l.php And we wonder why newspapers are in trouble? The Pitch ought to follow-up a just teeny bit more.

Re: Kansas City Star -- another round of layoffs
The problem isn't that the Star is losing money. It's actually making money. The problem is that the Star is making enough money to satisfy its new owner. This, this, this is The Star's problem. It has a lot of money-losing cousins in Florida and California, places that benefited greatly from the...

Re: KC STAR Layoffs?
And the first name is...classical music critic Paul Horsley.
Over at TV critic Aaron Barnhart's web site which is actually a Star blog anyway. He's also set up a farewell site here for the others who allow use of their name, but no one's on it yet.

Re: KC STAR Layoffs?
It's the Newspaper Death Spiral. Newspapers will be forced to lay off staff in order to maintain margins. Cuts in services will lead to cuts in editorial coverage, making papers less relevant to subscribers. As circulation declines, advertising rates will have to come down to remain competitive. Thi...

Re: raytown.
Well, how nice, a Raytown thread. My bicycle helmet and I moved here a year ago, lured by the affordable housing and taxes. I had been looking at Independence because they had a lot of cool old houses...but surrounded by crappy neighborhoods. I agree A lot of the housing stock in Raytown looks just ...

I was bored, my gf was at work, and so on. Plus this board needs to be a little lighter in tone sometimes, if you ask me.
The front end of that critter is mighty handsome, however.

WHY STOP THERE? The New Arrowhead can do it all! Bonus: Raytown will hav...

$3,700 a game?
In trying to break down how having sports teams affect the region economically (an almost impossible task), I don't suppose you could find a worse example that the one Jeff Spivak found in today's Star: a guy who spends $3,700 every time he comes to a game.
