Re: Troost developments

This addition to the project is basically to appease Hyde Park's desire for more parking. If they can satisfy that desire with the vacant lots, I suspect the building will stay. If not I suspect it won't.

Re: OFFICIAL - ARTerra (21st and Wyandotte)

Man, I miss the Pitch of the 80's and 90's.

But even the KMBC article seems unsure how to frame the story. Interesting.

Re: Oak Tower

The stucco panels may have compromised the historic integrity. Not certain about that, but it’s a distinct possibility. Compromised buildings are restored all the time using historic tax credits. Yes, but the amount of what's been compromised matters. I've seen buildings denied NR listing for far l...

Re: Proposed tower on Plaza

I'm torn as well. It's definitely a throwback to the Plaza of the past. But on the other hand, it's not even the nicest church on that block. And more people living in the city is generally a good thing.

Re: Proposed tower on Plaza

^A few things about the NR process. It may sound like semantics, but the semantics matter: The city didn't put the Flashcube on the NR, the building owners did. 50 years has long been the age that buildings become individually eligible for the NR. Buildings younger than 50 years can be listed if the...

Re: Westport

Topic of conversation on KCUR right now. Had to cringe when one of the guests(a young person), bemoaned the tear down of the bank (beautiful old building) and the 50 spaces of parking (unofficial lot of westport) for a huge development. This was followed by a caller who spoke of buying in the Roano...

Re: Westport

If the city is essentially cordoning off an area as an Entertainment District and pushing bars and restaurants into that area, oversaturation and turnover seems inevitable. Oh well.

Re: Troost developments

This is a good answer, and there is a lot to digest within it. The first is about the market. The U.S. is not a free market economy. We decided that after the Great Depression. And Kansas City development is not a free market economy either. Delayed property tax payments is one of them. Perhaps bec...

Re: Troost developments

How about letting the market resolve this "issue"? City regulations attempting to achieve "more purposeful economic equity" will likely scare away developers. After five decades of observation, I have concluded that the combined city government (council, schools, police) does more harm than good to...

Re: Troost developments

Yes, Kansas Citians like to identify with the neighborhood they live in and have thoughts on where the boundaries of those neighborhoods are. This is true.

Re: Troost developments

Developing vacant land and vacant buildings into housing and commercial space which can offer services is a neighborhood benefit. Yeah, it’s an interesting situation because it’s nice to have the new buildings but developers aren’t doing any of this for altruistic reasons (not do I expect them to b...
