Re: Property Tax Assessments 2019

Totally agree about the cap, but it sounds like gentrification isn't the primary driver of this. After reading this I'd image that there are properties in areas that have seen little investment but received large increases nonetheless. "The system isn’t changing, but the focus of the every-other-yea...

Re: West Plaza

IIRC the bigger chunk would be taken out of the parking on the east side of SWTRFY, where the Blockbuster used to be.

That intersection was studied by HDR in 2010 or 2011. IIRC the impediment was that any solution involved the strip mall losing a chunk of its parking lot. If you search around I’m sure this is discussed somewhere on this site.

Re: 2019 Mayor/Council Elections

Add to all of this the fact that we're likely headed into a recession soon. Lots of variables about to hit KCMO. The construction economy is markedly slower than 12 months ago. Add to the list of variables the fact that the property tax assessments hit hardest in the areas of the city that traditio...

Very well done piece on Freedom’s role in the Brandon Ellington mailer. Henneberger is probably the lone bright light at the Star, on either side of the editorial wall.

Re: Next Mayor 2019

Congrats to Lucas. I'm genuinely curious how his supporters will define a successful term in office. The few people I've asked have talked about "fixing affordable housing".

(Prediction: I suspect he'll be mayor until the nanosecond after Cleaver announces his retirement.)

Re: Affordable Housing

This is just the kind of feel-good, low impact kind of approach I’ve come to expect out of KC. We won’t change our Soviet style permitting process in order to greenlight projects faster to get more housing units built, we won’t try to align business relocation incentives with housing incentives to t...

Re: Property Tax Assessments 2019

Has anybody throwing a fit about this looked at comp sales? I have. My complaint is that the assessments didn’t track the market very well. Our assessment seems in line with the comps and for that reason we aren’t challenging the assessment. However, the comps around us have been going up since 201...

Re: Westport

I would think several hundred market rate apartments ought to help alleviate any perceived issue. It’s almost as if pushing through the sidewalk ordinance, killing off any discussion of staggering bar closing times, and imposing a development moratorium after the Opus approval had some consequences...

Re: Property Tax Assessments 2019

Wonder if the people who bought very cheap or a home in really bad condition got hit the hardest then they are shocked to see the rates go up. Mine went up 350%. I have heard similar stories from others in Hyde Park. Honestly, it was undervalued for years. The assessment had only increased slightly...

Re: Troost developments

We have a number of houses in Squier that were rehabbed in 2010-12 and continued to assess at close to the pre-rehab rate... until this year when they adjusted to current market value. The result means that, while the valuations are probably correct, homeowners are looking at a 500% increase. There ...

Re: Uptown Shoppes

The shopping center is facing the parking lot but by having the building on the back side of the lot it was easier to walk to from the neighborhood behind it where everyone in the homes lived historically. Bollocks. The building is sited where it is because it's the most visible and easiest access ...

Re: The KC City Flag

Isn’t that the current city flag with the red and blue blocks skewed? Does is need to be red/white/blue? Some of the more interesting flags posted here have been shades of those colors. I’m not a fan of the fountain heart thing - too clip art for me - but if it’s used it should be a bit smaller on t...
