Re: We need a new airport!!!

I know people are balking at the price of building the new airport terminal, but here's some perspective. LaGuardia Haters May Have to Find a New Airport to Insult LaGuardia Airport unveils a new look tomorrow as part of an $8 billion face-lift . Travelers will have to determine whether it’s still ...

Re: Black leaders seek to rename Paseo to MLK Blvd

Great, criticize it all you want. I don't even have a horse in this race, I'd probably err on the side of "if the community around the street wants to change its name then change it," but it ultimately doesn't make a difference to me. It was still a bad post. I restated it in starker terms than he p...

Re: Black leaders seek to rename Paseo to MLK Blvd

I wasn't responding to "everyone," I was responding to "can't we just give them a puzzle to distract them until this goes away?" by the dude whose only stated reason for opposition was not wanting to learn a new street name. It was a bad post.

Re: Amazon searching for second HQ

It's pretty cool how the $1.5 billion deal Andrew Cuomo cut with Amazon that everybody hates and that he intends to circumvent the City Council to push through got announced a week after the election. The system works!

Re: Politics

I think you’ve been going to too many communist reading groups or antifa protests. It’s time to get out into the real world. Claire McCaskill is probably right where America as a whole is on policy. Do you have any actual facts to cite, or is this just your own intuition? 70% of Americans (includin...

Re: Politics

Good Lord! And you trust polls too. “Should everyone in America get a house, and car and puppy from the government while working 10 hours a week?” “Yes, yes they should!” “Poll says 95% of Americans want to double taxes to pay for....” smh You could have just said "yes I'm talking out of my ass" an...

Re: Politics

Hillary won five states by less than 5%, and only one (Nevada) didn't go for Bernie in the primary. Granted that the primary electorate isn't the same as the general electorate, but it does give you a sense of what kind of Democrats are in these Democratic states. I'm curious which specific states y...

Re: Amazon searching for second HQ

Complaining about companies exploiting labor is way closer to what the book actually talks about than "desiring a govt to force social engineering conditions on capitalism."

And then, specifically, linking to it for sale on Amazon was a joke.

Yeah I'm not an activist shopper and will tend to do what's convenient/practical but developing a distaste for Amazon - have been on/off with Prime, not renewing again. Some alternatives are newegg.com ($50 membership/3 day shipping/zero restocking fees), ebay, shoprunner.com, shopping.google.com a...

Re: Politics

If every single Senate seat was up for re-election would the Dems have flipped it or would have held about the same? My best guess is the Dems would lose 52-48. Voters are too polarized/tribalized right now and there are too many sparsely populated deep red states. In the other two Senate classes, ...

Re: New transportation technologies

Serious question: are the Boring Company's costs actually lower, and do we understand how they managed that? Or are we just taking Elon Musk's word for it? This is the same guy who claims his unproven hyperloop that requires a sealed tunnel built along an elevated ROW is way cheaper than traditional...

Re: Politics

I think Dem-leaning Millennials who didn't vote in 2016 is a much deeper well than white supremacist Millennials who didn't vote, but I guess we'll find out who the Millennials are voting for eventually. I'd be more worried about high turnout among demographics that are more likely to vote for Repub...

Re: Politics

That USA Today article provides no context and so is extremely misleading. In absolute terms, only a third of Millennials voting sounds pretty bad. But midterm turnout in general is bad, and turnout among the same group in 2014 was less than 17%, so if a third of Millennials actually do vote this ye...

I don't know if there is exactly a "pact," but I do think a huge number of these people don't care how they hold power, as long as they do. See Fang, and that's what I meant when I said I do think you generally have your heart in the right place. But I had a very different reaction. To be clear, I generally really like Fang's posts and think he's one of the best we've got here (and Fang, I'm not the one who called you "nasty," although I did explain why I thought you had been called that -- maybe you feel the distinction is inconsequential). I just happen to strongly disagree w...
