Re: Politics

I am not certain that the apparent clarity with which 1970s era republicans were able to view Nixon's misdeeds is possible today. While the partisanship seems about equally toxic, there were not an infinite number of sycophantic blogs, podcasts, YouTube personalities, fake news propaganda factories...

Re: What other cities are doing about affordable housing

Why should the time of purchase mean citizens get a special deal on their taxes to keep them below the market yet be able to benefit from selling their home at market rates? Strongly agree, definitely think it's cool when poor people who maintained the neighborhood's building stock through decades ...

Bingo. The Tea Party will be back in force (perhaps under another name, who knows) the next time there is a Dem president (especially if that president is, again, not white).

Re: Politics

I'm afraid things that people expect to backfire still won't until people are genuinely hurt by the decisions. Often, that can take a number of years to realize. Right now, the Republicans can do whatever they want because they have constituents more focused on supporting things that aren't liberal...

Oh hey look at that https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/12/01/gop-eyes-post-tax-cut-changes-to-welfare-medicare-and-social-security/ House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) said Wednesday that congressional Republicans will aim next year to reduce spending on both federal health care and an...

Re: Politics

Tillerson may be sane, may have some integrity and honesty, but hard to call him even semi-effective when he's been intentionally and systematically crippling the State Department. And in other news: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/02/us/russia-mcfarland-flynn-trump-emails.html On Dec. 29, a transit...

Re: Politics

It sounds like that report might have overstated some, could just be a "senior official" who directed the Russia contact, but more details will surely become available

McCaskill isn't running unopposed, she's got a challenger hitting her from the left. I don't imagine she'll have much trouble securing the Dem nomination anyway though. I did not even realize that. It's some lady I think from STL area, used to work on ACA health exchange or something, has no govt e...

Re: Politics

I'm very pessimistic about Claire's chances but you'd hope even in a state as far gone as Missouri that a two term senator could win an election against an apologist for sexual predators who only even moved to the state in the first place specifically to run for the seat. But I'm guessing the GOP no...

Re: Politics

But it doesn't have zero net impact, it blows a huge hole in the budget, a hole that a year from now Republicans will clamor to close (but certainly not by simply reversing their ill-conceived tax cuts) It was excessively optimistic to think it would take them a year to start fretting about deficit...

Re: Politics

The US has the highest nominal tax rate for corporations in the developed world, it definitely does not have the highest effective corporate tax rate. And if the tax bill did for corporations what it claims to do for everyone else -- lower the nominal rates but broaden the base -- and had a zero net...

Re: Politics

I mean the modern Republican party is depraved, so I'm not surprised that they can pitch this stuff with a straight face. What bothers me is how terribly this plan is polling (even among Republicans and Trump voters), how brazen they are about the fact that they're just doing it to please the donor ...

Re: Politics

Yes, the tax plan is an enormous con job: a tax hike on millions of middle class families to finance tax cuts for the wealthiest of the wealthy, for people who earn income passively rather than through active labor, and for corporations (and as an added bonus, the corporate tax cut in practice means...

Re: Politics

Even DEMs were surprised by the elections yesterday. I'm actually rather surprised there doesn't seem to be a bunch of people howling about voter fraud. So... at least some on the left are surprised to see Dems win in blue states? They're surprised that the losing side doesn't have a "scream h...

Re: Politics

The level of GOP support does matter because it's not even settled law that a sitting president could be indicted for committing a crime. Ken Starr wrote a memo in the 90s arguing that the president could be indicted, but there is also a school of thought that impeachment is the sole constitutional ...
