Re: Buc-ee's Gas Station
I just changed the title of everyone's post. FFS, what a ridiculous misspell.

This is the billed usage on the new web host. Green is storage, blue is memory, orange is CPU, and the upper blue is network. See if you can guess where on the graph that the forum went live.

Re: Are the search settings tweakable?
We're on new hosting now, and everything feels much faster to me. I've converted the search index from a mariadb index to a forum-native one, with a 3-character minimum set. As of the writing of this reply, it's about 36% finished being generated from roughly 650,000 posts and replies.. I'm going to...

New Hosting 2: Electric Boogaloo
I'm still dusting some cobwebs, shaking the trees, and poking dark corners in the attic with my old-man cane, but the forum is now up and running on new hosting that should(hopefully) give us better/comparable performance, and cost us less. I fully expect there to be leftover issues, so please let m...

Re: Are the search settings tweakable?
The minimum threshold for a search term to be indexed is four characters. Reducing that to three would dramatically increase the size of the index, but maybe we can try it. I'm in the process of migrating the forum to new hosting, and maybe in the new location I can try allowing that setting and see...

Counting Pebbles
Since about the time the previous President was elected, my interest in politics-- especially elections and voting --has ramped up to where it is now. I annoy everyone I know, as this is one of the only topics about which I will talk at length, and I deeply care about it. I was unemployed for most o...

Database Crash @ 3:48AM MST
The database ran out of memory in the dead of night, and crashed. I suspect there was some kind of automated attack underway. We get them frequently but are usually able to weather them. I managed to get all the tables repaired without any errors, but I will keep investigating.
Sorry for the trouble.

Re: Reddit
Have you looked at LemmyBB? It's the message board for the Fediverse and has the same design as phpBB. Can post to/from Mastodon. I was looking at that and kbin, but I haven't jumped into them yet, as I am a bit put off by how expensive it is to run mastodon. I run my own instance , and with almost...

Re: Reddit
The idea of a decentralized internet with a million small players is actually extremely exciting to me. Do you think this community would use a mastodon instance devoted to it? I have been thinking about ways to integrate it with the forum. Like maybe a voting system that promotes good forum posts i...

So, Reddit is imposing prohibitive fees to access their free API. Because this API is free, a massive ecosystem of excellent independent apps exists today, a herd of apps that Reddit itself joined a decade into the site's popularity with a crummy, unstable app that's light on features and poorly des...

A study in procrastination.
We have a new forum version. Please report any problems you see here. From my end though, it's very fast.

"I have an artificial privilege that is inherently arbitrary."
"I am regarded as an expert in the field of urban development."
These are two extremely different statements.

Re: KCRag Blue checkmarks (verified users)
The only way to implement this kind of feature I could imagine that would be effective would be for there to be a mature approval process. And even then, I think petty squabbling would reign in cases in which some people perceive they were denied for what they believe to be reasons related to partia...

Re: Writing a Code of Conduct
It's sad you have to basically say, "No threatening to harm people." But I get it. Threatening harm is already a crime in every state and most Western countries, called assault. Expressing a wish for harm to come to someone is not a crime, but it's still abusive and unacceptable in a plac...

Writing a Code of Conduct
Some abusive behavior around here has prompted some to advise me to write, adopt and enforce a code of conduct for the forum. I was resistant to the idea at first, but now I think it's probably wise. I have some ideas, but are there any specific items you'd like to see in it? Here is the first one t...

Call for Moderators
With the political discourse getting more and more toxic, and since all the mods are a bunch of old forty-somethings now who, like me, have families and other major obligations that take away from the business of keeping kcrag civil, I think it's time to recruit some new moderators. I don't see any ...
