Re: Westport

Aren't those two apartment buildings used as office space for Sutherlands Lumber Company? I bet you anything this is for a surface parking lot.

Re: We need a new airport!!!

I was impressed that it passed by similar percentages in Clay & Platte, too. Apparently this was one issue that the river doesn't divide us on. So who are the 500 people that voted yes on 2 and no on 3? And are there just 11,000 that vote no on everything, no matter what? Had I been able to vot...

There were about six or seven voters when I passed through Gregg fifteen minutes ago.

Re: Martini Corner near 31st/Gilham

Gilham Road curves to the east at 34th Street, then heads north in an alignment on Cherry for three blocks, to 31st, before heading back west in front of El Torreon. Historically, it continued north to 25th Street and then curved into Pershing. When the flatter alignment was established on Locust fr...

Re: Westport

A signature piece of the 'Plaza Bowl' concept is that the low density, historic center is in a valley. Extending it up the steep hill to the north and into a separate topography is insulting. I can't think of any reason to use this logic, at least from an aesthetic or geographic perspective. Westpor...

Re: "The East Side" crowdsource definition

This is a generic map I made ten years ago, trying to group geographic features (for example, the ridge east/west through midtown) with highways, watersheds, neighborhood self identity, and development time period. These 'overall' districts would include the neighborhoods, for example, Northeast inc...

Re: West 39th Street Apartments

A road diet! As someone who lives in Manheim and works in Westport, I think about this all of the time. In fact, I sketched this last week. You could get away with dedicated parking lanes AND a dedicated left turn lane if you shortened the sidewalks, which is possible, because the parking areas woul...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Agreed...this isn't a normal deal. I think we all get that. I think the city getting outside council is a prudent step. Given it's not the city asking for bids in return for city backed money....I still am not sure what "bids" everybody expects here? Burns and mac have come in with an off...

Actually, they are not, as the city is preparing to sign the MOU.

Re: We need a new airport!!!

And by alarm bells I mean legal exposure for the city. It would be negative, indeed, if this project were held up by lawsuits from other developers who didn't get a chance to compete for the project.

Re: We need a new airport!!!

I really think this process should be open. B&M is an incredibly successful and talented engineering firm, and I don't doubt their expertise on the airside of the project, but I'm having difficultly finding any 'terminal design' images in their portfolio. We have some of the best designers in th...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

I know, there will be public oversight, my main concern is how much of a mark-up there will be to cover private construction loan interest and general conditions. And by mark-up, I mean 'less money to spend on nice stuff.'

Re: We need a new airport!!!

I'd take 3% less in interest and public oversight, personally. I disagree that pressure to perform and save dollars will lead to a more inspiring and lasting terminal design. Remember, this will be the front door of Kansas City for a generation. I'd take my chances with bond issue first. Voters aren...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

My point is, the B&M proposal is unnecessary at this point. Voters are already starting to understand the need, as you said. This new approach will only muddy the waters and ultimately will give us a watered down solution, at least on the passenger experience side, if it passes.

Re: We need a new airport!!!

This will pass easily in November. Why do you think this? Because of the private financing? I'd like to think that a bond issuance proposal would also pass. Two big negatives from the sole-source P3 proposal: 1. Higher interest rates and desire for profitability leads to a less than inspiring termi...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

It still looks to me like the only real purpose of this scheme is to trick voters into thinking that the private sector is eating some of the cost of a new terminal. This vote will fail because of its lack of transparency. The problem KC voters have with a new single terminal isn't the (non-existen...
