Re: Historic Old Northeast

And all of cities such as LA and Phoenix are entirely urban even where everything is one story and surface parking since there is no tree canopy anywhere.

Re: News from Omaha

Omaha already had a good connection to the river, this will make it tremendous! Wish KC could at least do a similar cover of the train tracks on the river bank.

Just basing from oral histories and anecdotal stories from parents, aunts, uncles and other elders who relied wholly on streetcars in all areas of the metro as it was then from the 1930s through the post-war years.

Thanks. From the floor plans and the already discernible elevator shaft, the crane seems to be to the south of the west wing of the guest room "L."

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

Seeing the tower cranes coming in from I-70 heading west into DT, this is going to make a contiguous skyline from Bartle pylons to the KCPA. I cannot determine from going by the site or the web cam, but the western tower crane, is it to the north or south of the future western wing of the hotel?

Think it would be harder to reinforce against a bomb in the contained space under a building(like a giant pipe bomb). Beside it some of the explosive force would dissipate in other directions.

Re: Phase Three Streetcar Expansion

"Nearly all midtown density arose in the bus era?" I don't think so. The bus era began after WWII. Much of what would consider midtown density would have been built between 1925 and WWII. When the streetcars began to go is when midtown began to have more parking lots and not much was built...

Why would anyone want to live here once they get a whiff of the rank odors from the plant across the river? On hot summer days it can be disgusting.

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

Not blaming anyone. This part of town has needed plenty of reinvestment for decades. I certainly have wanted improvement. Most of the houses I have owned have been in this area. But it has always been a source of lots of affordable housing close to public transit. A lot of people will be displaced. ...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

There won't be any midtown riff raff to worry about anymore. The streetcar generated gentrification will drive them out. Midtown will no longer be a great supply of affordable housing. The affordable housing crisis in this city is going to come to a head here.

They are just following the top of the beds of limestone formations scooping out the shale that lies between. This project seems to have been at a standstill for months. Could they be waiting for the pre-fab wall components?

Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

Not to be picky but there is no PAC in KC. There are PACs in other cities such as Tulsa but we have the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts so it would be the KCPA or, if you wish, a CPA.

Re: Martini Corner near 31st/Gilham

Most of those empty lots around the KCTV tower were brought up over the years because it was cheaper than to continue to pay for damages from ice falling on buildings from the tower. There was a piano company that even had damaged pianos in the showroom. I don't know if liability insurance to cover ...

Anyone have any info on who is building a concrete bunker house facing SW Trafficway? Guess concrete construction will muffle the traffic noise.
