Re: Urbanism, architecture, transit, strawmen, etc.

Not content to let NYC have all the fun, Chicago is poised for a skyscraper boom.

Re: Westport Terrace at Manor Square

It's hard to tell what the thing is meant to look like since they did the renders in MS Paint, but, yeah—my guess is it's going to be ugly as hell. Brick and stucco hell.

Re: HopCat at Westport/Broadway

Ugh, another huge beer list in an area that doesn't need any help with its beer lists. Can't we make these bars owners bring a few decent beer lists to the East Side instead?!

Re: Highways to Boulevards

The long-term outcome would likely be what we see in cities that never bulldozed highways through the urban core, and where it is consequently much less convenient to get from one suburb to another: fewer jobs in the suburbs and more in the center. Which cities are those? Only thing off the top of ...

Re: Westport's fate post-P&L

It will be free of charge, if everything goes as planned. Everyone watching the downtown streetcar line—and its unexpectedly high ridership, and general popularity—has noted that it is free to ride and otherwise as easy as possible to use, no matter your experience with public transit. The plan is t...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

But do fight back against an opponent who's punching you in the mouth, especially when you know you're going to win, and easily. And, look, when there's a prize worth fighting for, you have to fight. That's just the way the world works. There are three things that really aggravate me about the whole...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

Why has the ATA not yet brought in a bulldozer and cleared her out, cameras rolling? Or at least issued a cease-desist, CC'ing every media organization in town? If the answer isn't that they're biding their time, waiting for the right moment to strike, then somebody should be taken out and shot. I m...

Re: Highways to Boulevards

Your alternative hypothesis, that everyone will move to Johnson County if offices there become less accessible to the majority of the metropolitan population, is noted.

Re: Highways to Boulevards

If you remove highways that make it convenient to get from one side of the metro to another, people simply won't commute from one side of the metro to another. This is not a problem.

One that's still practiced every day in cities where free parking isn't considered a god-given right.

Re: Urbanism, architecture, transit, strawmen, etc.

KC serves as an example of a city whose "central areas resemble asphalt oceans dotted with buildings" in a recent article in The Economist on the ill effects of bad parking policies: Parkageddon: How not to create traffic jams, pollution and urban sprawl http://cdn.static-economist.com/sit...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

Alternatively: get excited to vote for the streetcar, look at a poorly designed map, think you live outside the district when you actually live inside it, don't request a ballot, don't vote. Your call. It's easy to draw a new map. Hopefully your failure to give a shit is a cagey tactic to keep peopl...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

A clearer map of who is voting would help IMO. The PDF can zoom in if you download it and open it in a PDF viewer. I and others on this board made the same mistake when the map was first published last year. On many displays, it's difficult to distinguish the white inside the boundary from the ligh...

... If you're going to talk about fraud and waste, begin there. ... Way ahead of you on that one, im2kull. But you've missed the point. I'm not complaining about the public expenditure. I'm complaining about the shit were getting for our money. Publicly funded projects should be designed to enhance...

Re: OFFICIAL - Hyatt Regency Convention Hotel

To clarify flyingember's misleading post, the city is contributing grants, tax abatements, and financing worth more than half the cost of this project. This is a public project, period. And we are getting this in return. Everyone at City Hall who helped to make this project happen should be ashamed ...
