Stowers Foundation pledges $2 million toward Academie Lafayette-Southwest high school partnership

Looks like Stowers and several other civic leaders are starting to dangle some carrots.

Re: The KCMO School District

Looks like discussions are on hold between Academie Lafayette and KCPS: March 10, 2015, Kansas City, MO: The Académie Lafayette Board of Directors and Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) have agreed to step back from the negotiations regarding the proposed partnership for a high school at the Southwes...

Re: The KCMO School District

Looks like Académie Lafayette is opening a high school in the SouthWest building, instead of redoing the westport site. KC Star: http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article588144.html Letter to parents: [snip] There is also an exciting development to report in our plans for an AL high school. As yo...

Re: The KCMO School District

Enclosed in the same letter to parents was the following claim: [...]this institution will contribute mightily to the renaissance of the central city. This past year, only 3 of 44 of our 8th grade graduates chose public high schools in Kansas City. The remainder either enrolled in private high schoo...

Re: The KCMO School District

Académie Lafayette announced to parents yesterday they intend to open a High School in the old Westport High School building. The curriculum will be International Baccalaureate, offering foreign language classes, but not immersion. They are looking to open in August, 2015 with a 9th grade class of 7...

Re: The KCMO School District

Right now the choice is between enrolling at Border Star for P3, or chancing it in the AL lottery at K. I spent some time at Foreign Language Academy, and was "generally" impressed with what I saw. If we hadn't been lucky in the AL lottery, I would have been comfortable sending my kids to...

Re: OFFICIAL: The Legends at Village West

I'll give them credit for trying though. I filled out an online survey critical of the food at wild bills and the manager personally called me and even sent me a 20 dollar gift card and asked me for a second chance. Nice when a company does that, unfortunately the food was as bad as it was the firs...

Re: Kansas, Missouri battle over companies

I have heard this a few times. I have a buddy who lives in West Plaza and he is not pleased to be commuting to the Sprint Campus. I resemble this remark. What's more, I used to work at the 2330 Shawnee Mission Pkway site (then, world headquarters.. now, KU Med), where I could walk to work. Now, I h...

Re: Village West will be very influencial in KC's future

Does anyone else think Cerner would have been a player to do some of the work that would have been funded by the $31.5M our governor just turned down? Facilitating competition amongst insurers isn't their current or core business but they certainly have health care expertise, data and programmers s...

Re: Kansas, Missouri battle over companies

The comments about the belief by some people JoCo becoming "ghetto" north of 435 are interesting too. I don't know JoCo very well, but is there really any blight in JoCo? Or are people in that part of Kansas so used to brand new infrastructure that any normal degredation of anything is a ...

Re: AWD Car in KC winter weather

I've owned a couple of subarus - but i'm pretty utilitarian, so I don't have any experience with an Audi, Volvo, etc to compare/contrast it with. I would like to mention that subarus (along with Porche) use a boxer engine, which helps to lower the vehicle's overall center of gravity. The boxer engin...

Re: Water One boil order due to water main break

Good to know. Thanks. So because the filter holes are bigger than most bacteria, does that mean the filter wouldn't have to be replaced because all of the junk just flowed through and out instead of getting trapped? I think this is true. Also, I believe the low ppm of chlorine in normal tap water k...

KC0KEK wrote: What if your refrigerator has a water filter, or if you have a whole-house system? Does that water still need to be boiled?
Probably should. Most bacteria is .4 micron (and very rarely as large as 5 microns in size) ... and refrigerator water filters are 1 micron at best - but usually larger.

Re: Best High Schools in the US (public)

If you would care to look at such things as students eligible for meals you would find your premise false.  Whereas Lincoln Prep is a college prep school and the KS schools welcome anyone in their attendance boundries, going to college or not, or just going through the motion of going to school. An...

Re: Best High Schools in the US (public)

Then it's not really a public school in the traditional sense like the JOCO schools are.  So it's no wonder the article's title mentioned JOCO and not KCMO.  If the school is only accepting kids who are going to get good grades, then of course it's going to be a good school. One could make the argu...

Re: Best High Schools in the US (public)

So if you live in Lincoln Prep's district, you can go there no questions asked?  Are there any standards or tests one must pass to enroll there? The second one. You'd need to live in the KCMSD, then apply to the school, and the student needs to score well on an entrance exam. At this point, the stu...

Re: Village West will be very influencial in KC's future

My understanding is Cerner wants to break into the medical billing / coding business. The business model will have hospitals and doctor's offices sub-contracting their medical billing / coding out to cerner. Cerner would then have a small army of call-center-esque workers doing the work. I suspect t...

Re: Cerner still committed to Bannister site

Does anyone know what (if any) tie in there is with the development happening on 87th street, just west of the bannister site? I think a medical company purchased the property a few years ago.
