Re: Affordable Housing

The affordability number today is about keeping the top of the market down so lower end buildings are less likely to raise rates. It's probably mostly to stop developers from calling insanely high numbers as affordable for incentives like they had been doing. Putting a low income person in 3 Light ...

Re: Fixing the KC Zoo (ongoing)

^ I’d guess that JOCO leaders would require funds go to their area too, like for the Deanna Rose Farmstead. They’re petty like that. They have every right to be "pretty like that." Any bi-state tax should benefit both states. As I recall, previous attempts have failed because the plan was to funnel...

Re: UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

Theis Park is a joke, never used and is simply open space. If the right developer or project came along, the city should seriously consider the exchange. I was thinking of Southmoreland Park when I said it was well used. Still, I would never advocate for anything other than landscape improvements a...

UMKC Conservatory of Music considers move to downtown

I was going to suggest across the creek from Nelson Atkins, then realized that was the MRI Global property haha. Don't think we have to worry about William Jewell becoming a big player, their accreditation is currently on probation. I'd leave MRI Global alone. It fits in well where it is and doesn'...

Re: Fixing the KC Zoo (ongoing)

I like the idea of an aquarium but not really sure its the direction the KC Zoo should go in. The Zoo is very spread out and should devote it's funds to infilling it's vacant spaces with new animal species. Since Wistoff has arrived, he's concentrated on rides, playgrounds and food venues and a coup...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

^^^^^ that sounds far from the truth. As said in the council meeting, an FAA ruling was not yet known and wouldn’t be released until later. Also, the Community Benefits don’t add up to hundreds of millions or anything large. Probably. But the easiest thing to do is just drop the community benefits ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Too bad, really. At least the design for the old KCI was unique and innovative for its time. What we’re getting here is the cheapest and most generic scheme possible, a step from Oklahoma City and on par with every mid-tier city in America. Congrats, KC. So many things went wrong with the marketing...

Re: Interstate 70 KC to St Louis

Since about 90% of the cars in Europe are Manual, does having a manual make you more of an attentive and possibly better driver? I mean about 95% of the people in the US do not know how to drive a manual and they are unable to be stolen by most thieves. Maybe but a lot of European countries do not ...

Re: Interstate 70 KC to St Louis

The broader comparison to make with US/Europe is that the US doesn't teach much etiquette in schools while Europe generally does. Americans value individuality a bit too much over valuing impact on society compared to Europe and especially Asia. It impacts many behaviors and Americans are poor at n...

Re: Interstate 70 KC to St Louis

Driver licensing in most European countries is considerably more time-consuming, difficult to pass, expensive, and...actually teaches you how to drive compared to what passes for driver testing and licensing here. Having taken and passed the British test, I will attest to that. I was pretty stresse...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Look at how long it took the Northland to take off. Johnson and Clay were nearly the same size until 1940 when JoCo took off. The early development was actually all east and south for the longest time. You can see this in the fancy homes along Swope Park towards the southeast, the streetcar lines h...

Re: KC in TV and Movies

Kind of an interesting KC-related tidbit from Wikipedia about the sitcom "Cheers" "Early discussions about the location of the show centered on Barstow, California, then Kansas City, Missouri. They eventually turned to the East Coast and finally Boston." That would have been interesting - tourists i...

Re: Drury Plaza Hotel

Here is the only description of the project that I have seen. I've tried searching the net for a more detailed description but could not find anything. It's a big project for being so under-the-radar. No mention in the Star and nothing in the business journal as far as I can tell (nothing turns up u...

Re: Drury Plaza Hotel

I'm not seeing anything in the document about the project occupying the entire block. Is it possible it's only taking up a corner? I mean, the current structure doesn't even take up a third of the site Not seeing any kind of details that would show the footprint of the hotel? For a project of this ...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Think of the resources our city spends uphold racism on one had and help alleviate it's effects on the other. Think of what those resources could go to if we didn't have to do this. Look at the police budget, if I recall, it's a HUGE portion of the city budget. It's primary job is to police our eas...

Re: 95 Metcalf North Plan submitted to city

This from the Star today. Development looks pretty substantial: $250 MM. I am wondering, however, if the company (Shamrock Trading) has the wherewithal to pull it off and then occupy it let alone deliver the promised jobs. I am always skeptical when smallish companies promise to triple their workfor...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Yeah, the plaza is mostly made up of single use buildings. The bowl design makes it hard to be mixed use because, well, you can't build up. I think you will find a lot of opposition to removing the bowl design, at least from the general public. I’m sure many on this board would be for the removal. ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Flew to Houston for the first time in several years this past week. And parked at the airport overnight the first time ever. (we normally do drop off) Hobby airport isn't much busier than KCI annually and I must have seen 200 people getting food and eating just in one of the three arms at 8:45 in t...
