Re: Urbanism and Pros and Cons of Gentrification

Is gentrification even an issue in KC for the poor? There are no large tracts of urban KC being gentrified, every gentrification effort is pretty small scale and localized (e.g., Beacon Hill and West End). Also, somewhere on this forum, someone posted recent population trends for the the portion of ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Hell yes. Absolutely. Watching the council trying to play up to their constituencies by trying to extract CBA money from Edgemoor is painful. KC's politicians are trying to milk this thing to the point it will no longer be an attractive investment. And once again, KCI may be in KC but KC residents ...

Re: Amazon searching for second HQ

I hear everyone talk about universities and don’t understand that knock on us as a candidate. We are the largest metro area to: KState, KU, Nebraska, MU, MSU, ISU, etc. not count MS&T and other smaller universities. I'm not saying those are bad schools at all, I'm just saying that almost every ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

http://www.kansascity.com/opinion/editorials/article194513689.html KC Star calls for regional airport authority. KCMO should use this as leverage to get regional transit funding. Hell yes. Absolutely. Watching the council trying to play up to their constituencies by trying to extract CBA money from...

Re: Dismantling of Great Mall (ongoing)

I see some things never change about Kansas. They are going after STAR bonds to build this redevelopment making sure it will be a "tourist destination". FYI, The Great Mall was highly subsidized and was supposed bring in people from all over the midwest by the bus load too. Now it's a fie...

Maybe time for it's own thread? https://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/news/2018/01/11/childrens-mercy-pediatric-tower-funding.html?ana=e_kan_bn&u=iz2lrOOUyzTofQsIwjLD8A0cb9071d&t=1515686659&j=79486401 The Business Journal kind of buried the lead. One of the more notable side-notes to t...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

So have CBA's become a standard part of deals in the US between cities and developers? Or is this some kind of one off in KC? Reminds me of what a third world country would require of a western oil company as part of a deal to get a concession. Hope the council is grounded in reality here - if a com...

Re: Downtown office vacancy

So it's official that DST is sold. They own a lot of buildings on W Side of Loop. They are expected to consolidate data centers and corporate functions in near term so likely a hit on jobs and possibly a building or two sold if not more eventually. That would put more space on market so of course d...

Re: KCI Flight Schedule Adjustments

It's a start but I'd much prefer a flight that terminates on the continent. As it is, on the outboard leg, it's simply trading the connection location with some east coast city unless one is wanting to see a bit of Iceland. Iceland still requires a multi hour flight to continental Europe. The payoff...

Re: Buying a Condo in Downtown KC!

I saw this article in the Star this morning regarding Millennials in KC preferring to buy in the burbs and not the KC urban core. http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/community/article192831699.html As someone who has kept their eye on the KC condo and urban home market for the last few years with t...

Clickbait is clickbait. Missouri is ass-trash backwards from a civil rights perspective, but no worse than the rest of the south, and even then it’s still light years ahead of probably 75% of the must-“do” destinations in the churn of yuppie travel porn. The "Rest of the South"? For Shame...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

I was already sold on and voted for the new terminal, but I flew for the holidays after a not having flown for a while and it was fairly awful. Granted it was Christmas Eve-eve and probably somewhat busier than usual, but the time it took to push my way through the masses of people to get from B40 ...

Le Fou Frog This is where we ended up for our special occasion. We loved it. Some great suggestions here but we had never been to le fou frog and thought it was about time to give it a shot. Next year its going to be the Antler Room. our trips to KC are commonly food excursions and this holiday exp...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

Check the city manager’s twitter feed for some interesting comments: @kcmomanager I always favor the unadulterated professional opinion rather than those compromised by political considerations. All that said, one of the unfortunate consequences of ever letting this get to a vote is that now the co...

Re: Does the tax bill put the earnings tax at risk?

Now that state and local tax deductions will be capped at $10,000? Not payroll deductions, federal income tax form deductions. Being a federal tax code change it only affects what someone does on their federal taxes. For KC residents, it would be people making 6 figures annually. Well my point was ...

Re: The Netherland and Monarch on Main

Fantastic news. I figured the taller of the two buildings would be eventually torn down as it was in fairly bad shape. That would have left a gaping hole on main street. This is one of the more positive developments I've seen in KC midtown for a while.

Any news on this place?

I read great reviews early on...then the car crash. Was really hoping it would open back up, seemed like a great idea and concept. It's been 6 months since the crash, has the owner revealed anything about a timetable for getting it re-opened? Is that even going to happen?

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Williams-Sonoma is slated to close mid-January. I have heard a lot about how the new owners of the plaza wanted to make the plaza more of a high end retailer again but I've yet to see any evidence of that. As much as I didn't like Highwoods, the new owners haven't really seemed to improve things on...

Re: Westport

The U.S. murder rate in the 70s was almost double what it is now. That war on drugs might actually be working! Many people have tied the drop in the murder rate to the US supreme court decision on abortion. If you look at when the murder rate started to decline and how precipitous the decline was, ...
