Re: Trees in KC (ongoing)

Speaking of the politics of trees... We used to live south of the Plaza years ago in the Wornall Homestead area. When I was growing up years ago, my parents made the mistake of planting a maple tree in the outer lawn (the area between the sidewalk and the street where property rights are iffy). The ...

Re: Aggressive panhandlers

Sort of in line with this: I started using touch-to-pay methods when I realized that not sliding one's card into a slot means no skimmer can steal information. Contactless payments are more secure as the actual credit card number is not involved - a token is generated to authorize the single transac...

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but it sure seems appropriate for this forum.

If someone posted this elsewhere, I apologize.

Re: OFFICIAL - Main Street Streetcar Extension

Another not-so-pleasant corollary to this situation is that you have to make sure to check the seat before you sit in it; it may be empty for a reason. When I was still living in St. Louis, sometimes people under the influence of alcohol or drugs would have relieved themselves right in the seats on ...

Re: OFFICIAL - New KCI Terminal

Been catching up on threads for a bit lately after an absence from KCRag. This one made for interesting reading. I loved this line from Sani regarding the glass jet bridges: I'm glad we sprung for those instead of the windowless ones made of corrugated steel, fluorescent lighting, and despair. Those...

Re: Is Midtown Marketplace one of the city's greatest blunders?

Is this suggesting downtown overall had a diversity of services, or that “Macy’s on Main” as it was ultimately called, was one of the chain’s true flagships (435,000 sq ft) with all services including places to eat and special events programming, which it most certainly was. This may be unbelievabl...

<dons asbestos suit> I like Whataburger. They don't drown everything in (barf) ketchup like McDonalds, and their burgers have actual meat in them. I can get a burger with cheese, mustard, lettuce and pickles and without (gag) Thousand Island dressing. Steak & Shake just opened in West Des Moines...

If you ever wondered why your luggage tags at Kansas City's airport say MCI instead of KCI, this is why. Many thanks. I've always assumed it had something to do with most of the "KCx" codes being already taken. KCA ZWKC Kuqa Airport KCE YCSV Collinsville Airport KCH WBGG Kuching Internati...

Re: Downtown Casino

If Missouri legalizes sports gambling, I'm more conflicted. In the state of Iowa, prior to this year, if you wanted to use sports betting apps on your phone, you had to physically go to a casino and register first. As of Jan 1, 2021, that requirement was removed. The only requirement now is that yo...

Good point - had not considered that.

There was a coal chute door in the foundation, but it was permanently sealed shut with concrete.

Re: Home prices across KC neighborhoods

The house that I grew up in (Country Club district, a few blocks north of the John Wornall house) was built in 1915. Three full floors and a basement. My grandparents bought it in 1949, and my mother's generation grew up there also. Interior walls were plaster and lath - no sheetrock. When my grandp...

Fang, if they are going to move Costco 1000', they may as well build it on top the home depot. Build a Costco on top of the Home Depot, you say? Well, it WOULD be increased density. So to speak. Plus it would free up some additional room for other things. There would have to be some sort of freight...

Speaking of whom, there's also this U2 effort that was filmed in Kansas City. Burroughs appears at the very end.

Re: Downtown Q3/4 (re-)occupancy needed - service industry needs love

Been working from home non-stop since 3/17/2020. Company (national financial firm) keeps moving the back-to-the-office date farther out, most likely based on continuing spikes of COVID-19 occurring around the country. I actually have fewer distractions at home than at the office, where I have a co-w...

Instead of a 24 screen theatre with giant projection systems and 300 seats, I would expect they shift towards offering smaller premium experiences and double up the spaces in a renovation. More Bar + dinner theater options and less popcorn and soda to increase the average per customer cost More lea...
