Re: Wizards could ditch Bannister site in favor of Wyandotte County

Lee's Summit is not the same suburb it was in the 80s[sic], but thanks for sharing. I did say it was an asynchronous comparison, so you are basically repeating my disclaimer.  But, yes, a synchronous cross-sectional comparison would have more validity.  I apologize for the tangent.  Having grown up...

Re: Wizards could ditch Bannister site in favor of Wyandotte County

I lived in Lee's Summit from age 0-18, and have lived in North Central Johnson County from age 23-32 (present).  So I can only make an asynchronous comparison.  However, the people I knew in Lee's Summit were much more frightened by "the city."   When people found out where my mother grew ...

Re: What's being built in Olathe

I think you are pretty much limited to lunch business.  The sidewalks roll up at 5 around the courthouse.  And what residential is around there is mostly populated by older folks who probably don't eat out much.  You have a lot of lawyers coming and going from the courthouse but almost none of them...

Re: What's being built in Olathe

Yeah, they have been working on that for years.  That is why the city bought up Alexander and Ray's and some of the other buildings on Santa fe.  They finally expanded the downtown parking garage the past couple of years.  The plan is to improve the streetscape in the next few years then have the c...

Re: Steve Rose is running for Congress

Has anyone ever read a Steve Rose column? I have and I had know clue what the hell he was talking about. The guy is a certified idiot. I certainly would not call him a "certified idiot."  I've read many of his columns, but I don't make an effort to do so.  It seems like most of his opinio...

Re: Steve Rose is running for Congress

Rose will need the social conservative vote to be split, or else he won't have a chance in the primary.  But I think they dislike Rose enough to coalesce around a single candidate.  Thomas Frank refers to Rose as the "Mod Chieftain," in What's the Matter with Kansas?  Rose has enemies with...

Re: Metcalf Redevelopment

Yep.  That Cherokee South plan was sad.  The new Walgreens they threw up is typical Walgreens crap (with nicer materials).  It's too huge and eats the corner of the development.  Why would anyone want to rent the space behind it?  It is totally blocked by that huge cartoony-tall Walgreens.  And wha...

Re: Metcalf Redevelopment

I'm not too well versed in JoCo politics, but my impression is that Eilert is very fiscally conservative and generally pro-growth and pro-sprawl, while the incumbent Annabeth Surbaugh at least talks about being more sustainable an developing more dense clusters and expanding transit. I'm not super ...

Re: Metcalf Redevelopment

I am not too happy about what's happening at the 95th and Antioch node.  I could be wrong, but it seems like a suburban shopping center is staying a suburban shopping center.   On a related note, Ed Eilert is running for Johnson County Commission Chair.  I will be interested in his current positions...

Re: Collison: Destionation developments lure shoppers

I'm not sure DUH is the right response to that article, given some of the "destination retail" that never got off the drawing board. (Legoland, Lenexa City Center, etc) Lenexa City Center is "off the drawing board," but is developing slowly.  So far, I have found it underwhelmin...

Re: Collison: Destionation developments lure shoppers

I am still not sure why Mission has decided that an attraction makes more sense than residences.  Was it just a way to secure STAR bonds? I prefer the idea of a few mixed-use buildings, rather than an attraction.  Keep it simple: street-level retail, with offices and residences above.  I don't think...

Re: What's being built in Olathe

So Olathe actually has a downtown.  It's where they keep the jail, and government buildings.  Apparently, at some point, the city plans to spruce it up a bit.

It sounds like he's holding the square hostage.  I think the former slave auction should be turned into a museum related to slavery and the African-American experience in Missouri.  I don't know why he was so "excited" about that site, but this seems like a worthwhile use.  It would also c...

Re: Overland Park Top Ten Place to Grow Up

Half the prestige is in the newness and being in a new area, regardless of cost or quality - why else would we keep moving further and further out? Laissez-faire capitalism coupled with a frontier impulse that's been present since Europeans colonized North America.  I am only halfway joking here.  ...

Is that any different from south olathe?  Doesn't stop people from adopting the mantle.  You are probably right.  But I'm overeduated, so I'm always trying to discover nuances and their political implications.  Here I think there is a nuance that is related to a Gramscian concept of cultural hegemo...

Re: Overland Park Top Ten Place to Grow Up

I am actually not sure if Gardner is attracting the same SoJoCo types. The houses in Gardner do not seem to be all that "stately."  They are like what you find in north-central Johnson County, except with more garages and less hardwood flooring.
