Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Hmm, I think selling residents would be harder than selling the developer. The plaza in the most NIMBY of NIMBY places I know. I’m not sure changing the plaza fixes the bigger problem. What’s needed is to expand retail outside of the plaza. The Whole Foods store is a great example of this. We shoul...

Re: Buck O'Neill International Airport

I agree it is harmless. I agree it makes no sense. I also think it's silly and artificial. But if it is harmless and legitimately makes some people happy, what's the big deal? I can't really see any practical reason to oppose. Maybe some day we'd like to name things after people that mean something...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Right, understand downtown has more desirable mix but the discussion is not which is better, but how to improve the Plaza, especially when it can become a better urban _neighborhood_ as well as shopping destination. Agreed, and I think maybe we're talking past each other a little bit. I would love ...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Walkable drugstore/market are the basics. But the premise of my posts are about adapting Plaza to broader 'pedestrian scale living' amenities mixed into the shopping, which is elaborated on in the other link. And The Plaza has the bones to create that. When I talk to my bother in Brooklyn about fin...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

I don't really get what it is residents are asking for? Is it just a drug store?

Like in the glory days of the past plaza, what was there that you want back?

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Some of the existing upper floors could be changed to residential. Sorry but there is still more density around Plaza (mid/hirises) than nearly all the rest of KC. Is strange to ignore this. It's not like they have to target building much new residential (like downtown), it's already there and igno...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Sorry, but when you can't build taller than two stories, and the neighborhood throws a fit every time you try to build even on the outside, it's hard to change things. You could theoretically fix this, but it's just a very weird neighborhood. I'd probably focus on making it more pedestrian only thro...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

The problem with the plaza is it's a pretty shitty urban neighborhood. The weird bowl design and lack of density mostly kill any hope of it being a proper, mixed use urban district.

Better to just appreciate it for what it is than try to change it.

Re: Buck O'Neill International Airport

I'm not even sure I'm okay with naming the terminal after anyone. But I like my idea better than this nonsense.

I'd prefer a rotating local exhibit that pays to tribute to KC

Re: Muehlebach Hotel / KC Club Project

Couldn't they make the money by charging for parking? Or at least a reasonable amount? Like, why free? Garages aren't profitable because of the initial cost + operating overhead. That's why they're often incentivized, municipally owned/managed, or dedicated to one user who can cover the losses. Her...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

MCI will live on because the letter K is reserved and IATA would never allow them to change it anyway.

I agree on the terminal being dumb too. They should raise money from local companies and create a great urban park or something to name after him.

Re: 13th and Grand tower

I will say that the value of this property may be getting too high to keep as parking though. But that's just speculation from me. I bet the ambassador and UMB would both rent parking from them, and they could build spec or hotel on top. City would probably kick in to keep Grand moving. I'm sure it'...

Re: 13th and Grand tower

The description is outdated I think. I just don't get it. This would probably be a 200 million dollar development and they can't even get the basic description of the project on their website right. They are treating this project like a total pipe dream that they know will never happen. Hard to tak...

I heard the truck ran a red light, but I didn't see it.

It'd be interesting if every streetcar published accidents per mile rates. I wonder where we fall on the spectrum.

Re: favorite under-the-radar mexican places in the kansas city area?

Anyone enjoying Mission Taco downtown? We liked the stl locations and enjoyed our first visit to the KC location. I've only been in STL, but I liked it for what it is (and that's not an insult). I have similar thoughts to KC taco company, in that's it's normally not what I'm looking for when I'm fe...
