Re: Slate: Why St. Louis should move to Illinois
It also comes down to education. A large part of the rural population doesn't advance past a high-school education--if that. In fact, in a lot of areas, the anti-education sentiment is very high, as well as the resentment factor. This is the hotbed of the anti-science, anti-intellectualism streak t...

Re: Slate: Why St. Louis should move to Illinois
There is a troubling trend in many states where state legislatures are prohibiting cities from enacting their own laws on many issues. Despite my previous point, I don't deny this either. Perhaps a side effect of cities progressing faster than their rural counterparts (including the trend of people...

Re: Slate: Why St. Louis should move to Illinois
The funny thing is that many southern Illinois residents would rather be Missouri ones. And as mentioned, having STL join Illinois would not work in its favor. The issue with this city-state dream is that it's not like KC and STL are unique among American cities or even those in other countries; I c...

No. http://thenewinquiry.com/essays/in-defense-of-looting/ Well then... if they are so sure about that, then I sincerely hope that they have a plan to build something constructive out of the ashes. And if this is explicitly anti-police, I'm honestly curious to know what they want to replace it with...

If anybody's interested, here's a recorded compilation of the testimony and evidence: http://hosted.ap.org/specials/interactives/_documents/ferguson-shooting/ And regardless of views on the case itself, can we at least agree that the actions of the rioters and looters over this night are inexcusable...

Re: Ferguson, Missouri
If people judged KC based on a Chiefs game we'd be screwed. yeah, the lower midwest is a fucked up animal. both kc and st. louis are in the same boat wherein there's an island of progressive minded people surrounded by rednecks and hoosiers... Isn't that in itself a pretty damn generalist "us ...

As many may have seen mentioned on Antiques Roadshow, Halls used to sell fine art and continued to sell vintage decorative art or "antiques" up until Halls Plaza closed, mixed in with the new merchandise and often described on handwritten labels in some detail. Some of these items were pu...

Ever since that ad went right back up on the side of the building, I thought it'd be cool for the drink itself to make a comeback. I rea...

Re: Is KC a hit among millenials?
The only issue I'm seeing is that the same people I know who enthusiastically move to urban KC also will flat-out say that they don't plan on staying, but instead plan to move on to places like Austin or the coasts (usually the west) once they get enough money. Granted, they are young and still rela...

Re: Ferguson, Missouri
It looks like the whole militarization of the police force thing is something that many on the right (at least libertarian right) and left seem to agree upon as counterproductive. These police seem to be completely out of control. Where the heck is Gov. Nixon with the Missouri National Guard? Where ...

It may just because I was usually leaving/arriving in the early morning/late night, but in my experience, the people dropping off/picking up passengers tend to stay in their cars and at the front instead of going inside...

I really hope that someday KCAI forms an architecture/interior design department and has it anchoring a DT campus like with California College of the Arts.

While the state doesn't have any hate crime laws, there's a chance of federal charges being filed.
On another note, I noticed that a couple articles are saying "'Kansas City' shootings".
Plain and simple.

True. Just addressing the idea about expanding the parking in that space while still maintaining the view of the city from the park.
Personally, I definitely agree that whatever goes there, it would be nice to have street-level parking.
Infill is winfill...

Re: Washington Sq Park between Crown Center/Union Station
The blocks surrounding the park are pretty well maxed out every direction except immediately north. That parking lot to the north is its only hope, and sadly building something here would destroy the city view from this park, which is outstanding. Also, the train tracks just north of that lot don't...

Re: Global Overpopulation (or not)
It's true that low income and few possessions doesn't equal poverty, but those qualities (as well as poor health) does lead to poverty. What we are focusing on aren't self-sufficient villages and such. What we are focusing are the depressed communities that do have all the issue that come with pover...
