Book Recommendations!

The long awaited KCRag book club is here! Book recommendations do not have to be related to Kansas City, or urbanism, or anything in particular. First try to recommend books you think the forum may enjoy though. I'll start by recommending Devil in the White City by Erik Larson https://upload.wikimed...

Re: OFFICIAL - East Village

Huh? It's between the Crossroads and Columbus Park, the CBD and the Zone of Compassion. Sure, it's adjacent to those things, but does it lead to them? Not really. It's isolated from most CBD development by the civic mall, is connected to Columbus park by a single crummy street that has to tunnel un...

I tell ya, watch 9th Street! It's gonna be a thing!
Some of KC's best old buildings are along that stretch. New England Building, Bunker Building, NYL Building, the Scarritt Complex, 909 Walnut, Grand Ave Temple, Pickwick.......

Re: OFFICIAL - East Village

The East Village in Des Moines that Collison writes about reminds me more of our North Loop than of our East Village. The north loop is an empty space sandwiched between two active neighborhoods, just like how the place in des moines is sandwiched between the capitol and the CBD. Our east village is...

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

It turns its back to our beautiful performing arts center and instead towards our beautiful skyline, and that's great. The Kauffman already faces south, as does the ballroom, and Bartle just has no face. Having a prominent structure facing north into the heart of downtown is far superior in my eyes ...

The final finishes won't just be uplit concrete. There will be more going on there than it looks right now https://i.imgur.com/RCsUdP5.jpg It's not excellent, sure, but I think it's acceptable. Of course, in my ideal world it would be covered in some sort of ornamentation, but obviously we don't liv...

Re: OFFICIAL - East Village

In a fantasy world I'd love to see that area become a skyscraper district like hudson yards in NYC. They have a perfectly clean slate to work with and it would all overlook the city hall park beautifully

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

A building doesn't need to be completely ringed with retail to be urban. The new york life building has no street level retail or transparency, but it still contributes to the street through architecture and presence. While the convention hotel isn't anywhere near as beautiful, it adds to the neighb...

I'm just glad it's facing the CBD. The convention area hasn't had a north facing building since municipal auditorium

Re: The View at the West Bottom II (Weld Wheel Building)

It's back! Apparently ownership has changed and a serious plan is in the works for this place, encompassing all the buildings on the block. I got to tag along in a tour of the place before construction starts and have even more pictures to post https://i.imgur.com/0fyDvgh.jpg https://i.imgur.com/iCY...
