Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

i dont think Rye on the plaza is an effort to entice JoCo residents to go to the Plaza. (1) JoCo presence on the plaza is already quite strong and probably isn't hurt or helped by Rye. (2) the plaza is a super-regional destination so it's probably more about attracting or keeping the MO/KS/IA/NE/AR...

Re: Ambassador Hotel (1111 Grand)

Reserve is definitely open and continuing to provide a great lunch and happy hour/dinner. Yep didn't mean to imply they had closed, and to be fair I haven't been in some time. Just have felt like that space could justify a restaurant/venue that becomes a household name among locals as a solid dinne...

Re: Ambassador Hotel (1111 Grand)

Great news. I've been impressed with the Ambassador renovation since it opened. Glad to hear they're doing well enough to expand on that scale.

Would love it if they could get a marquee restaurant tenant in there to take advantage of that beautiful lobby/bar space but unlikely under Marriott.

Re: OFFICIAL: East Village downtown neighborhood

Currently downtown is on an upswing but go back to the 70's and 80's the Plaza and Crown Center definitely had a more positive vibe, outlook and future than downtown. Absolutely. But I would take issue with the opinion that these places have had anywhere near the detrimental effect on downtown that...

Re: OFFICIAL: East Village downtown neighborhood

The Plaza area probably has had as much negative affect on downtown as JoCo. Disagree. Looking at office space alone, the lifeblood of a CBD, JoCo has created massively more square footage than plaza/midtown and the effect continues to depress the downtown market. Plaza is in no way comparable. Per...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

I found myself chuckling last week after having the most amazingly convenient (that word again!) airport experience of my life, at KCI. All of the cards aligned - late arrival (10:45 PM) on Thursday evening from Little Rock, exiting on SW gate nearest the baggage claim, bags were actually unloaded v...

it's also much more walkable to amenities and services than our prior location (south hyde park) trying not to derail the conversation about BKS, but this statement is such a perfect example of how far Hyde Park, specifically, is from functioning as a truly desirable urban neighborhood. Without any...

NOOO not Po's! Was my favorite Chinese in the city for many years. It will be missed. I've been spending a lot of time out-of-town and hadn't yet noticed it was gone. Blue Koi finally shut em down. Shit.

Re: Brookside

Tried to go to Julian back in October with out-of-town family. Was completely dead (albeit weeknight), had to wait quite a while for the one front of house staff member to acknowledge us, inquire about seating. Looked a little run down. No Celina. Ended up at Carmen's nearby. The writing seemed on t...

Re: Westport's fate post-P&L

Noticed one of my urban pet peeves while in Westport recently. New businesses going into a space but leaving up an old sign, or tattered remnants of such: Snow & Co left the giant old green "WESTPORT/BLAYNEYS" sign right over their front door (as did prior tenant). Mills Record Co has ...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

Why don't we just stage a sit-in on her illegal little chunk of heaven? This would be hilarious. And awesome. While I understand that there is little to be won for the city/KCATA in fighting her on this, I'm kind of with Pash that I wish it was at least acknowledged and mocked in the public realm.

Thanks all for the pics! This is surely one of the most impressive projects downtown; even the exterior lighting is top notch. Very happy to see successful office/retail use as opposed to residential here. Looking forward to the new construction addition getting off the ground and adding a nice urba...

Re: Aggressive panhandlers

On an individual level this doesn't bother me; just don't give money and move along with your day. In the grand scheme of things, it makes the urban core less desirable. If panhandling happened equally between say Plaza, downtown, Brookside, OP, Lenexa, and Leawood, wouldn't bother me. Unfortunately...

What is the point of reusing the building if they are going to demolish the majority of it? They might has well just built it all new in the East Village. Yes. Putting "the YMCA" in the old Lyric building didn't make sense to me from the beginning (and saddened me), and now it just sounds...

Re: Highways to Boulevards

The long-term outcome would likely be what we see in cities that never bulldozed highways through the urban core, and where it is consequently much less convenient to get from one suburb to another: fewer jobs in the suburbs and more in the center. Which cities are those? Only thing off the top of ...

St. Louis Sewers

Interesting article re: cost to improve/fix the combined sewer issue that many of the nations older cities (including KC) face. Love the bit about the River Des Pere tunnel under Forest Park. There's a mention about KC's agreement with EPA as well, and the green infrastructure plan in the Marlboroug...

Reaaallly cheating here with several individual goals embedded within the primary 5 below. 1. Streetcar (fareless) extension to Plaza/UMKC. Affordable, easy to construct, Main Street width should make higher speeds more attainable. Building on existing success. I would prefer further extension but i...
