Re: Bannister Mall/Cerner

On another topic, heard that Cerner is reimbursing employees $5K on buying a home if within 3 miles of new campus. True? Are they offering to reimburse their employees for private schools as well? $5K isn't exactly a large enough incentive to make it worth any family to put their kids though the Hi...

Re: Sears closing

Menard's would have been the smart choice for the Metcalf South land. It's more of a destination since they tend to be larger stores and don't flood the market the same way Home Depot and Lowe's do. The Menard's stores in Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan, Salina, Wichita, and Garden City, Kansas are alwa...

Re: Independence Center

New owners could rejuvenate the mall much like was done with Ward Parkway. True, there isn't that much close-by competition to Ward Parkway but new owners could possibly pick it up on the cheap and have funds left over for a make-over. Was at the IC last Christmas season and I don't remember seeing...

Re: Sears closing

Meijer has started to close a few stores because the Wisconsin expansion is putting strain on them, and Shopko already tried in Joplin, Wichita, Paducah, and Cape Girardeau and bombed terribly. There's no name recognition for them out in this part of the county except for the often rundown and dump...

Re: Independence Center

I don't think the mall will go away, they will probably just try to restructure the loan or something. It kills me though, Herbert Simon, net worth 2.7 billion USD why can't he just pay it with his own cash? No, it will just fade away slowly like Metro North. I don't see it tanking fast like Bannis...

Re: Sears closing

It's across street from it. It would be funny if Menards also opened at intersection. Menards should have been targeted all along, but they've pulled out of so many sites in JoCo before that I'm not surprised that they didn't show interest in this property. The Sears real estate investment trust own...

Independence Center

http://www.kansascity.com/news/business ... 20274.html Simon is going to default on the malls loan. Looks like Oak Park will be the last true mall in the metro to fall after all.

What they mean is you won't see like Great Clips but maybe another Chain like it not here. Places like maybe Stage,Gohastings,Shopko or Meijer,Urban Outfitters,Bloomingdales,Bealls,Belk,Gander Mountain,HHGREGG and so on. Lets see... Gander Mountain declared bankruptcy so I doubt they'll be coming i...

Re: Metcalf South Update

The articles I've read and newscasts I've seen on this development all feature residents who say they support the Lowe's angle over Vision Metcalf because they don't want the property to languish any longer and that the needs of the neighborhood have changed since Vision Metcalf was put together. A...

Re: Ward Parkway Mall just sighed up

I think the Macy's at Oak Park Mall was where Dillard's Men is now. I clearly remember a Macy's name plate embedded in the sidewalk outside the store before all the expansion happened in the 90s. Although I guess it's possible I'm remembering a Stix name plate... That's what I listed in my post. Di...

Re: My Kansas City Area Photos

I appreciated all of the photos. Even the sad, suburban ones. They remind me of their better days. The shot of Metcalf South awaiting demolition evoked various emotions, including fear, sorrow, respect, and deep contemplation.I also like the variety. That alone sparked genuine interest. I regard goo...

Re: Former Merriam Kmart

No Winsteads on 95th. I could name Food places that would be good not in that area. Sky Golf,Revolution. Academy Sports and Outdoors or Gander Mountain? Sam's Club or Costco? Supercenter Walmart? Meijer? Theme Park? Yes there is! Walked there from my hotel back in September. It's over by Sam's Club...

Re: Homegoods

Shopko Hometown has locations near by so does Stage and Goody's Family Clothing. Ross doesn't have a location on 135th Street/Santa Fe yet. BAM only has one location so far KCK. HHGREGG? Bloomingdales but Macy's closing locations across the country. If REI wasn't their then Gander Mountain or Sport...

Re: Former Merriam Kmart

As is Winsteads. I'm happy there's a plan, but doubt it will be mixed use. Merriam is pretty blase about pushing back on developers and that spot has been empty a long time. Not living in KC I have to say that I was pleasantly impressed with Winstead's. I've only ever been to the ones on 135th and ...

Re: Ward Parkway Mall just sighed up

The south end of the Ward Parkway mall (it was largely linear) was dominated, per my distant memory of the 1970s, by the chic St. Louis department store, Stix, Baer & Fuller. I recall oversized 1970s black-silver-and-mirrors décor. It was considered the most fashionable of the KC mall departmen...

Re: Former Merriam Kmart

It's too bad that Menards pulled out. It would have been the largest store in the chain... The IHOP outparcel is empty too, but Denney's and Krispy Kreme are good tenants.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/33134456@ ... 2271917516 I have some modern shots from 2015-2016 that show of how good the existing interior portion looks, but I want to see photos of when it was more, well, mall-like.

Older ugly section of Oak Park Mall (down by JCP where the ceilings tend to be water damamnged and such.) https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5323/18873284822_1af356fa05_c.jpg Slightly more attractive section of Oak Park Mall that was redone for the Nordstrom addition (though why they didn't just redo the...

Re: Homegoods

HomeGoods seems to be a discount version of Bed, Bath & Beyond; this could be the most "upscale" development they have been in. Seems like an odd choice with their neighbor being REI, which is definitely not discount. But it beats an empty building. I take this as they're desperate to...

Re: Ward Parkway Mall just sighed up

Does anyone have any vintage (pre reconfigeration of the lower leval at the least) pictures of Ward Parkway? There are pictures of Antioch, Blue Ridge, Bannister, Metro North, Metcalf South, and even The Landing everywhere on the internet, but Ward Parkway and Mission Center have eluded me thus far ...
