Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Just here to comment that it was in the news the other day that REI isn’t doing that great at the moment and has laid off a bunch of people to prepare for challenging times ahead.

Re: Former Kmart some movement

This K-Mart site, which opened circa 1970, and a couple other K-Marts (the northland I-29 site, for example) were vacant for about as long as they were open. My last visit was 1986 to buy a footlocker for books to take to college. I think it closed around 1995, nearly 30 years ago. 30 years of prim...

Re: Independence Center

I thought that big outlet mall in St Louis was basically closed too. Are you talking about the one off 370? St. Louis Mills (the one off 370) closed down a while ago. Only Cabelas is still open there. Chesterfield had two outlet malls open within months of each other (Taubman and Premium Outlets). ...

Re: Housing Prices Are Booming in U.S. Cities

Another important "megatrend" is that the postwar housing boom -- the vast construction tracts from 1948 until the oil crash of 1974 -- those units are nearing their end-of-life. They were built cheaply, not like the more solid homes of the prewar period. The streetcar suburbs (Brookside,...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

What are the Halls doing? Honestly. The sports deck and hotel topper spaces have an insane amount of untapped potential. On top of that, they have acres of developable urban land next to a future streetcar stop being used as surface lots for about 10 cars a day. They mothball most of Halls and cont...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

Marriott has has very little to do with the removal of restaurants, bars, the decommissioning of the activity deck, and things like the removal of the conversation pit in the Westin lobby. Those were all Hallmark decisions Oh, another big drop was that the Hall family never envisioned Halls anchori...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

Did anyone else go on the tour on Saturday? The answer about Skies ever rotating again is a definitive no. Why? How is that hotel doing anyway? I still hope that a higher tier hotel will come in and renovate back to to a top tier flag. Because a sister property with the same mechanical systems, had...

Re: Independence Center

Independence really needs to start thinking about how to rebuild the mall into something more mixed use. I honestly think it would be pretty easy to do considering its layout to add residential or something. I’m pretty surprised they haven’t pushed harder for redevelopment considering the mall is i...

Re: Independence Center

From Photos I saw on a Facebook group today, they’ve pulled out the giant obstacle course thing that was never open, the European furniture center in the old Macy’s is permanently closed, city gear, a division of Hibbett sports, has gone out of business, and Dillards is cleaning out a large portion ...

Re: Companies moving/expanding to KC area

Could be worse for Emporia than us as the Lenexa bakery never reopened. The Emporia bakery has been one of their more stable employers since the college and Tyson majorly cut back on staff.

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Starbucks should not be there. For decades that was a locally owned charming German cafe---Emile's. Plaza was best when it was a combo of some high end, lots of local, some neighborhood. Target could be the equivalent of what Sears was half a century ago on the Plaza. I would love to see Target tak...

Re: 50th & Rainbow Mixed-Use

Bringing more people into a rapidly aging sector of the county & all they can do is complain. Saw the headline before I saw the site & thought it was hilarious. I drive by here all the time & there isn't even foot traffic, it's all older residents that are stuck in their ways. I wouldn’...

Alright, here we go! One step closer to new ownership: Plaza owners default on $300M loan in new sign of distress https://www.kansascity.com/news/business/article278847049.html That's my biggest fear, that even with the right ideas and city support in hand, the Plaza's owners aren't in financial co...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

IK a developer who reached out wanting to build residential and retail. Was told there isn’t an interest in deviating from the retail only plans. They might change their mind if Dillards decides not to come to the Plaza. How likely is Dillard's anyway? Seems like there was a flourish of speculation...

Random Plaza updates: - Himiway e-bike dealer opening soon (Nichols by Tivol; former Archive space) That's interesting - An ebike dealer on the plaza. Are they keeping their Oak Park location as well or moving? I believe them using the old Brookstone was just a test space as it’s becoming Gearhead ...

Re: Postcards From the Edge of Time

Seems that Jupiter was a part of Kresges back then to compete with TH&Ys five and dime. They had a store across the river in Kc Kansas around 7th street if my memory is correct. Jupiter was the fate of many Kresge Stores as they lost profitability, but still had time left on their lease. It was...
