Re: Packard Auto Dealer - Later Bill Neale Chrysler Plymouth?

Zlohban posted a link to Hemmings which contains a photo which looks familiar.  If this is not a photo of the building which I recall, it is certainly of a building with a similar architectural style. Slimwhitman suggests that the dealership might have converted to a Chrysler agency in the late 1950...

Re: Packard Auto Dealer - Later Bill Neale Chrysler Plymouth?

There were quite a few auto dealers in the downtown area into the 1960s.  I recall across from Union Station where the Crown Center Hotel is presently, there was a Ford dealership (was it Rudy Fick?).  If I recall, Midwest Dodge was the last of the downtown dealers, being active on Truman Road well ...

Re: Packard Auto Dealer - Later Bill Neale Chrysler Plymouth?

The photo appearing above is of an older building which was replaced just after WWII by the building on Main.  I've heard 1948 though I have no way of confirming or denying that date.  Appearance of the building would suggest that it was probably built about that time. The Main Street building laste...

Packard Auto Dealer - Later Bill Neale Chrysler Plymouth?

There was a car dealer located at about 25th street, just south of Union Station.  It was originally built as the Packard dealer; later became Bill Neale Chrysler-Plymouth (remember the singing cars?  "You get the FEEL-ing of honest DEAL-ing, when you see Bill Neale!") A question arose rec...

Re: Armour Theater

Armour Theater is very nice.  From the moment I walked in the door, I was impressed.  Screenland made the Armour into what movie houses used to be: an event.  Staff is very pleasant and enjoys talking with customers.  I will definitely return to the Armour to see movies.

Re: Does Anybody Remember Sandy's Oak Ridge Manor + salad dressing?

Roanoker, thanks for the link to the application for National Register of Historic Places.  One of the sources was Vera Eldridge whom I remember to be an enthusiastic historian and someone always willing to share her knowlege and love of history.  Her husband was Bill Eldridge who served as Clay Cou...

Sandy's Oak Ridge Manor

I posted an item in "General Kansas City" but it occurred to me later that anyone who would know the answer probably lives north of the river.  So, I ask that you check my posting about Sandy's Oak Ridge Manor if you think you may have any ideas or suggestions. Any thoughts would be most a...

Does Anybody Remember Sandy's Oak Ridge Manor + salad dressing?

Does anybody remember Sandy's Oak Ridge Manor?  Strouds acquired it a few years ago but it's just not Sandy's. Louise Sandstrom was a WWI war bride from Germany who came to this country.  In the mid-1950s, the Compton home was still being occupied by the last members of the family which built the or...

Re: Where is Harlem ?

Harlem was at one time a nice community.  Very much lower class but a nice community where everybody knew one another and people took care of one another.  The center of the community was the Harlem Baptist Church.  People were poor but they didn't really care  because it was a nice area where peopl...

Re: Antioch Center will get state tax credits

The owner/developer has intentionally downgraded the property to the point that it is blighted.  They have intentionally run out locally owned small businesses and schemed against long-term tenants so they will not make capital improvements. Now  they come to the government asking for a big check. T...

Re: North Oak/Vivion project

The large house facing Vivion Road is the Vivion home.  It is my understanding that the Vivion family donated the home and land to the Baptist seminary for the purpose of providing a home to the seminary and also preserving the beauty of the land for future generations.

I knew the Kempers were involved in destruction of Emery Bird Thayer.  Didn't know about the other two.

6:30 AM with the Nelson Atkins Museum

I still haven't decided whether I like the new buildings or not.  I'll have to give it more time.  Now that they're finished, I'm starting to like them.  Still don't much care for the shuttlecocks, however.  As a general rule, I like modern art and am fascinated how modern art can be applied in diff...

Postcards From the Edge of Time

Of all Kansas City's losses, I believe the destruction of Emery Bird Thayer & Company is the greatest.  I have a vague memory of the second Board of Trade Building but it was designed by a Chicago architect, unlike Emery Bird's which was an entirely Kansas City creation.  I remember riding with ...

The photo and postcard of Independence Avenue Methodist Church brought back bittersweet memories.  It was such an incredibly gorgeous building.  The north side and main entrance was on Independence Boulevard (renamed Boulevard from Avenue a few years after the structure was built).  Dominating that ...

Re: The Northeast -- you don't see photos of this very often

I don't know the answer to where this apartment house was located although would suggest that it is not the Paseo.  Buildings along the Paseo tended to be larger and less ornate (though my memory does not extend back far enough to remember all of the residential property).  This building displays mo...
