Re: Wichita's Downtown development

Was in Wichita for the first time a couple weeks back, some big things happening. Good to see. - Union Station is undergoing a complete renovation. - Next door, Cargill is wrapping a large office building. - Few noticably newer apartment developments (including one that's a half conversion of a park...

Re: Bird Scooters Have Landed

It's unnerving since there are so many good bike lanes all over that city as well. There are a few, but the bike lane network really isn't that strong – and they rarely will get you to near the front door where you're trying to go. Living in DC, people do use the sidewalk a good bit – I've never re...

Re: Google Maps just did another satellite view update for KC

Looks like the satellite update is from a Saturday morning about ~10am. Swaths of empty parking in Crossroads, while River Market surface parking is near capacity.

"The City has signed an interim operating agreement with @BirdRide, a company that rents electric scooters. People should follow bicycle rules while riding these scooters. Ride in the streets, or in bike lanes where available. Do not ride on sidewalks." https://twitter.com/KCMO/status/10243816816403...

Re: On-going downtown development projects

I just wanted to keep an updated sticky for on-going development projects in downtown KC (let's define that loosely as the River Market-Crossroads-Plaza Corridor). I would like to continually update this. I would like to keep this to concrete proposals (even if they don't come to fruition) rather t...

A $225 GPS spoofer can send autonomous vehicles into oncoming traffic https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/07/a-225-gps-spoofer-can-send-autonomous-vehicles-into-oncoming-traffic/ Satnav is basic level "guidance" system for an autonomous vehicle, behind things like LIDAR – a public v...

Re: Bird Scooters Have Landed

Lime started in DC as 100% bike (400 vehicle limit), but has switched at least 95% of them over to scooters.

Re: Bird Scooters Have Landed

It's Day 2 – let's give both Bird & users some time. They have an infinite number of scooters they can deploy, if demand dictates.

Re: Bird Scooters Have Landed

Those are unenforced Bird rules, so far as I know – vehicles are same in every city. KCMO has made zero public guidance for these – given the vehicles blur a line within current regulations. __ Yeah, that's what I was implying. If profitable, wouldn't be surprising if Bcycle buys them. Maybe – don't...

Re: e-Scooter Share

The only valid complaint I've come across is people going too fast down sidewalks with pedestrians. All companies educate riders on this, but it's much more a city infrastructure issue than the companies doing anything wrong.

Re: KC Bike share

More carriers always eats into profits unless the new carrier brings increased demand by having a differentiated product. I don't think dockless vs. location based brings that differentiation. So, profits per carrier will fall and will be covered by "more efficient" operations, i.e. less frequent m...

Re: KC Bike share

This is the bigger issue for me. I know that competition will lower costs and, perhaps, increase access, but I think it will also dilute the product. Right now, our bike share system seems very well run, clean, maintained, and growing. I’m worried competition will cheapen the product. Bikes will pi...

Re: KC Bike share

What cities are 'a mess' with them? I've seen these in many cities, and that's just what change-fearing NIMBYs claim.

This will all play out over the next few years, as demand and use cases are further understood – companies will continue to refine & users will come out on top.
