Re: Westport

not sure if it's still the same but i always thought of 39th as KCMO's "tenderloin." despite being immediately adjacent to some fine or fun areas, it's like gentrification-proof. it wasn't that long ago that people would see public defecation in broad daylight, needles all over the ground, gunpoint ...

Re: Union Hill Development

i think the logistics of those storefronts present a bit of a challenge--or the perception of a challenge--being set up high off the street, on a fast street, in a zone with a lot of construction. unless you live right there within walking distance it seems like kind of a PITA to stop and go in.

Academie Lafayette

Our daughter has been admitted to AL for Kindergarten. We do have at least 2 other options we are looking at (she goes to Sion now and we also are within the Hale Cook boundary) so I wanted to get feedback from current and past AL parents about their experiences with the school. (If you feel more co...

Re: Brookside

Plate did kind of try and fill that void with an upscale concept, and it actually was quite good the few times we went. I am not sure it was quite "destination restaurant" status but it was several cuts above most other BKS places, including Julian. They are reportedly re-opening, but I am a little ...

Re: Misc Crossroads News

a great pork chop can be as good as any steak, chicken, duck, etc. dish you can imagine. but yeah, great ones are kind of few and far between, and people tend to overcook pork chops. the last time i had the pork chop at potpie, it was fantastic. for a while, broadway butcher had these ridiculous age...

Re: Brookside

Maybe they have a reason for donating/sponsoring that isn't related to attracting more applicants. it has been a little while since i heard it, but my memory is that it was definitely something explicitly requesting for families to apply to AL vs. a generic "KCUR is supported by AL" message. I susp...

Re: Brookside

That makes sense, I did not realize they added so much new capacity. Also, with Hale Cook and other charters, AL has a bit more competition even though it remains the perceived (and probably actual) best charter.

Re: Brookside

Academie Lafayette will have a high school so we are looking like we will stay all the way, maybe you can get into that school. Our kids love the school and I am very happy with it we're in the AL (and crossroads) kindergarten lottery, allegedly will find out tomorrow whether we got in. as an AL pa...

Re: Brookside

Agreed. Summit Grill and Red Door seem very similar to me. Large, loud places with very broad menus with "something for everyone" and executed pretty well. It's easy to get people (like 70 y/o parents or coworkers) to agree to go there b/c the menus are safe, and my wife and I can deal with it b/c t...

Re: Brookside

I also co-sign on Barrio being very underwhelming, although clearly I am in the minority b/c that place is routinely slammed, esp. during patio weather. If the place doesn't work out, at least the next tenant will have a nice build-out to work with! I can make a case for Jalapenos b/c I am very forg...

Re: Brookside

Interesting you mention Carmen's, we have never been there. Maybe we should? Bella Napoli is probably the best place in BKS, offering a nice package of quality and atmosphere (esp. during patio season). BKS Poultry's product is pretty good, but to be honest it's hard to drop that kind of $ on a whol...

Re: Brookside

Back to Brookside, we continue to really love the area and would like to stay for the very long-term. The major thing that Brookside seems to lack are good restaurants. There are a few good places, but it seems incongruent with the neighborhood, esp. as the area seems to be getting younger overall.

Re: Brookside

And Prairie Village is the one that should be re branded to Brookside West. PV is basically a Brookside wannabe, or at least it used to be. It's basically Raytown housing stock with Leawood prices and none of the charm of Brookside. PV is Raytown except that it stayed white when the blacks started ...

Re: Cocktails

agree on many of the places mentioned, and i'll add ANTLER ROOM. great cocktails (including the best $6 happy hour cocktails in KC), very nice wine list (by glass and bottle), and really good and interesting food. dining and drinking at the bar there is our go-to right now. their georgian dumplings ...

Re: Misc Crossroads News

This may be covered elsewhere, but the new (ish) Waldo Thai Place at 85th and Wornall (where Swagger used to be) is really, really good. The food is really flavorful and hella spicy - the thai fried chicken is amazing ("fried" is a bit misleading, it's brined for several days, slicked with a hot mar...
