Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Deliberately increasing property values can hurt the long-time neighborhood homeowners. If a resident is on a fixed income, or a younger homeowner has inherited their childhood home, but doesn't earn a lot, they are facing increasing property tax bills. It can also affect them to the point that they...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

I still don't see how they couldn't spend $50,000-$80,000 renovating the existing houses, and basically sell them for the a bit more than the cost of the renovation. The houses were given to them after all. Many of these houses appear to be in decent shape, and the type of houses that investors buy,...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

I'm actually surprised St. Lukes is building single family houses. I would have expected that the parcels they owned would have been redeveloped as multi-family buildings. Why demolish single family houses to just build single family houses? Wouldn't it just be easier to remodel the current houses? ...

Re: New Downtown YMCA

All along I have thought this site choice had more to do with DST Real Estate, enlisting the Downtown Council to back it, to get this piece of real estate off their ledgers to please the newer, activist DST board members. It was always going to be a difficult building to reuse. A complete demolition...

Re: Old KCPS HQ - 12th & McGee

We can't just tear down every building because someone doesn't like it. There are other reasons to reuse a building. Climate change. Anyone who denies this is just burying their head in the sand. When discussing demolition, we need to remind ourselves that gases from producing the concrete, steel, g...

New York Should Say No to Amazon A city that thrives on the energy of its neighborhood merchants should not offer incentives and giveaways to an internet giant known for squashing small businesses. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/09/opinion/amazon-new-york-business.html?fbclid=IwAR30CcuJqFXbhR_nsUJ...

I think Beto more than has the personality but not the depth. He’s probably more of a 2024, 2028 candidate. Just not enough experience or substance. He’ll definitely be a future Dem nominee. The Dems did something very smart in some races this term; they had women with military backgrounds. All of ...

In many parts of the USA, eligible voters who didn't vote in 2016 outnumbered those that voted for either Clinton or Trump. It's becoming harder because of so much consolidation, and storefront retail going out of business. I don't know at what point that it will be necessary to use anti-trust laws to break up some of these companies that are getting close to becoming monopolies in some markets. For example, Wal-mart is ...

If I were the property owner, I would keep a few of them for landscaping purposes --assuming they don't need to demolish all of them for construction access. Certainly get rid of the ones in front of the doors, and on the corner that just block pedestrian flow. Since there are so few trees on Grand,...

Re: Old Federal Reserve (925 Grand)

It's possible. I think the planters were placed atop concrete slabs on the sidewalk. I can't remember when they added how it was done. They may just break them all apart to get rid of them. They were taking out one of the bomb planters today, and had two people dangling down the side working on some...
