Re: Troost developments

The people concerned about development live in CHP and Janssen, so if retailers never return it doesn't change anything for them. They will continue to drive everywhere for basics. Their warped sense of urban aesthetics trumps economics. People interested in opposing them should read this: https://...

Re: Kc skyscraper drought about to max depression era droughttt.

Yes, I saw that. But that is a case of developers maybe coming in and developing properties in the area. I'm talking about all the land under the Cerner campus footprint, where they could create a walkable neighborhood instead of a sea of surface parking. I cited housing for about 2000 employees ons...

Re: Kc skyscraper drought about to max depression era droughttt.

I wouldn't criticize Cerner's campus at the Bannister location if their proposed plan included building a lot of dense residential around their office buildings, and many of their employees could live near work. Or at least set aside parcels for developers to do this. It would be very easy to build ...

Re: Three Light

It make be ultimately pointless with regard to the Cornish agreement, but if this is the start of a shift by the city away from building parking garages, Shields and Canaday can take all the time they want. Yes, the people of Cornwall can be quite stubborn. :D There will be a need to build parking ...

Re: Three Light

The City is contractually obligated to contribute to building the garage. I doubt a review is going to change that. Shields and Canady are just playing politics here. Shields is running for mayor, so she wants to look like someone who is trying to save the City money, and appear as someone who is no...

This is one of the mislabeled photos in the library's collection. It's actually a photo of one of the dining rooms of the demolished Baltimore Hotel, which stood where City Center Square is now. The Baltimore Hotel had some of the best public spaces of any building in the city. The building only sto...

I think part of the problem Kansas City has attracting other big developers is that they can make a better return on investment building in hotter markets.

Re: Berlin - Europe

It is amazing how fast they rebuilt cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, and Dresden after WWII, and how much investment was required. They were devastated and in 40 years were rebuilt. It took almost 10 years to clear the rubble alone. Forty years ago was 1978, and KC has blocks all over our central city...

Re: Slovenia for 7 nights

I've been reading a lot of articles recently about how great Slovenia is. If I were going to Europe, I'd consider a visit there. I've read that Croatia is being over-run with tourists, and the government is considering, or has, started to limit the number of visitors to the old part of Dubrovnik; as...

Re: Three Light

We have plenty of places to put shorter buildings in KC. In a luxury downtown high-rise, the selling point is the view. People want high floor apartments with views. Otherwise, what is the point of paying a premium for a downtown apartment? It's really stupid to invest millions in P&L, and not p...

Re: Hospital Hill activity

When you are seeking to find someone willing to undertake the move expense and effort--and since historic houses are involved, a public publicity effort is very much called for. These were not houses that had sat empty for years in neglect. People had recently lived in them. Sure, I'm told they need...
