Re: Amazon searching for second HQ

Interesting article from Chicago that it is "theirs to lose". They mention all the advantages Chicago offers. But no mention of where it could go. Where do you find a spot to build 8 million sq ft of office space there? I would think, like Seattle, they'd want to be downtown or an urban se...

Re: Amazon searching for second HQ

Good point on the $ this would bring the region. Transport is a definite concern for a KC bid. But it would kill Austin's chances. Austin is a traffic nightmare. 2 million people, 1 Highway! They voted down lightrail. It was voted as worse traffic than LA. Imagine KC with just I-35. And the cost of ...

Re: Amazon searching for second HQ

How many American cities over 1 million have a huge downtown plot of land just sitting there ready to develop? Give Amazon the East Village. They can build towers and take the whole area. Google Fiber + Low cost of Living + Vibrant downtown + Light Rail/Highway Access + New Airport(?) + Central loca...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

Back in KC for the weekend and went in Nike Plaza store. No exaggeration above, it's bad. Hardly anything in it except shoes? Can't believe they allow their brand to look this bad. I wish the city would take a bigger partnership role in the Plaza. They should be coming with proposals and shared fund...

Re: OFFICIAL - Hyatt Regency Convention Hotel

Relax, no city has a good looking convention hotel. Dallas - box, Denver - box. It's just not a thing. It's a shame given KC's recent run of great buildings (PAC and Bloch buildings)

The only hope is that the 1% for art (if that applies) gives it some life.

Re: California tech firm will move HQ, create 300 jobs in downtown KC

I had to move to Dallas from KC several years ago. I can assure you the cost of living in Dallas is much higher. Dallas has reached that tipping point in population where rents have gone sky high. New buildings in Uptown want $1500 for 500 sq ft. Depending on the area, it's 30 to 40% higher than KC....

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

lol, how is this turning the plaza to shit?! Retailers come and go. In this case they are building their own store out south. Retail is always changing yet people pine for the old days of whatever place they used to shop. Amazon is turning retail upside down and high end retailers are struggling to ...

There's a news story out that Morgan Freeman is moving to KC?! Said he loves the people and bbq. If so, couldn't be a better add for the community

Re: Rankings, lists, and such

As a transplant to Texas, I can tell you the BBQ here is spotty and mostly not good. It's also a colossal scam. The latest fiasco was at a new spot in Downtown Austin called Cooper's. Looked cool, great outdoor patio. First, most TX bbq places entice you to walk by a grill and choose what you want. ...

Re: We need a new airport!!!

After 15 years, I moved from KC to Texas. I used to be a big fan of KCI as convenient, easy, etc. I recently flew to Chicago with a SW stopover in KC. Horrible. Being trapped in that crappy low ceiling SW crap-space was awful. The electric outlets near seats didn't work. Bathrooms were in bad shape....

Re: Denver Union Station Rehab and Reuse

The cool thing is that Denver is filled with guys like you...hyper-aggressive about why Denver is the shit when it's really not (maybe you should try San Diego for the real deal). The capital of Western Kansas is less than inspiring. The city beautiful movement clearly passed it by. I get it --- you...

Re: Denver Union Station Rehab and Reuse

Really? One shiny bldg. set you off? You might like One Light as well. I've stayed in Downtown Denver. It has its own set of problems. Start with the 16th Street Mall. Most people don't recommend it after 6 pm. It's filled with beggars and meth-heads (in packs) looking for their next score. Walking ...

Re: Proposed apartment for 13th and Walnut - One Light

Back in KC for a few days so first look at One Light---looks great against the skyline. The all glass looks especially good. I've noticed most new high rise apts in Dallas are mostly stone, some glass. Is that combo cheaper? Have to say the sleek glass look of One Light looks much better

Re: New Convention Hotel

Does the 1% for art apply to this project? If so, $3 million could add some cool feature to the top of it. With all the city funding, I'm hoping they'll be some demand on the design. This city has built some really ambitious - and architecturally significant - buildings and this should not be an exc...

Re: Proposed apartment for 14th and Grand - Two Light

This place is going to have killer views of downtown. It sits back just far enough to the south to give a panoramic view. No wonder the design, as a block wide, fronts the skyline. A good use of the top of the garage as an outdoor space. Noticed the angle at the top mirrors the wedge look of the KC ...

The South side would have to include windows. In any condo they'd feature windows for all units on all sides. They'll be selling south views to the Memorial on high floors

Um, it's just the living room of the city...and named one of the top 50 public spaces in the world. You make it sound like it's Oak Park Mall. The Plaza is not just a shopping center.

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

The Plaza needs a Plaza but I don't see Highwoods giving up that surface parking lot or spending the $ for it . The only way it happens is if a civic group starts a drive to fund it. There are two levels of parking below. The lower one is almost always empty. The parking can still be available. I'm ...

Re: Austin Texas is Booming

I'm in Austin this weekend so taking a look downtown. Condos going up everywhere. Today's paper said another one planned will be 2nd tallest downtown bldg. 50 stories? Saw one ad for 1200 sq ft unit that reminded me of condos in Wallstreet Tower. View of river and few low office bldgs. 1 bdrm, 1.5 b...
