Re: Houston: City Gone Wrong or Model of Urbanity for the Future?
I would agree that Houston is denser than most make it out to be but considering Galveston as the southern tip of the CMSA also makes the case that it is sprawly. I would never argue that Houston is not urban, cosmopolitan or even a not a world class city. There's just nothing endearing about it. It...

Re: Houston: City Gone Wrong or Model of Urbanity for the Future?
I have family in Houston and have spent a lot of time in Houston. I will categorically say that it has to be the most un-aesthetically pleasing city I have ever encountered. I don't think the infrastructure has ever caught up since it started booming in the 80's and it just looks like there were nev...

Hmmm.... Columbia, Ill., snubs Legoland COLUMBIA, Ill. — Columbia is saying no to big development — again. The City Council has rejected a proposal for a massive theme park on the Columbia Crossing tract. On Monday night, the council voted down an incentive package aimed at luring the theme park, an...

Re: thinking of moving downtown
I agree, I have been getting rid of a lot of "stuff" I have collected over the past couple years. My only difference from probably most of the people here is I have a pretty strong interest in motorcycles, on road, off road, and road racing (race tracks). I always own at least one bike ...

Re: OFFICIAL: East Village downtown neighborhood
From my perspective building the GSA complex on the riverfront is not much better than building it near KCI. On a map in a fancy report it looks like it's downtown but in reality it would behave like a typical suburban office campus. For that matter, Kemper seems like it's located downtown in theory...

Re: KCMO Economic development taskforce
Other than Andrew Taylor, the CEO of Enterprise Rent a Car, (at least he's a resident of Missouri and has business interests in KC as well) I don't think the Mayor could have picked a more anti-TIF biased chairman of the task force for KC eco-dev policy. All Bill Haw, who probably thinks of Emporia ...

Re: Amtrak considering St. Louis/Springfield route
This thread reminded me of a proposal for passenger rail service between KC and Branson during Branson's boom. I just googled it to see if that service would have gone through Springfield. http://kansascity.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/1998/07/27/story4.html Except for the rail line between Pl...

Re: Official: KCMO Light Rail
How else would you capture them and have them dedicated to this project? Otherwise they just go into the city's coffers to be spent how the council pleases. Transportation District Tax. So far KC has only used them for parking garages to the best of my knowledge, i.e Plaza. In fact, the historic t...

I find all this talk as if the Parks Board has been ruled with the iron fist of white elitists since its inception amusing, considering it was Ollie Gates baby throughout all of the 90's.

Johnny C's Pizza at 75th & Nieman and as an added bonus there is the Trailridge Cinema next door which also hasn't realized it's not 1982 anymore. For $20 you can have a pizza, a beer and wander next door and catch a movie.

Re: Xroads one of largest art districts with over 70 galleries
I would say since last summer it is more common to sell art on a FF than not with galleries I work with. In fact, this past FF one gallery sold about $4,000 worth of art. The interesting thing I've noticed in the last couple of years about FF is that it's turning average KC residents looking for som...

Re: Disney to Ozarks?
I can state as a fact, if the words fact and rumor can be used in the same sentence, that Disney rumors have swirled around the Ozarks area for at least 30 years. In the mid 70's when I was just old enough to dream of a trip to Disneyworld the rumor was that Disney was buying land on the north side ...

Re: Kansas City NHL Articles
Good post. Still tho, you could always get anotehr 50M easy just by selling naming rights to it. Tons of firms would pay for it. From the best I can tell it's part of the $3.6 million. My little analysis only scratches the surface. Large brush strokes if you will. Obviously there are lots of movi...

Re: Kansas City NHL Articles
Unless Rendell accepts a realistic cost for a new arena and comes up with some more money from the state the Penguins are leaving Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is broke, there is no way a city that's cutting it's mass transit in half and is showing up at churches with hat in hand for donations to keep the...

Re: Just got back from Kansas City...trip recap
The city has a very spacious, well-designed feel to it, I can't really put my finger on it. You can thank George Kessler and the City Beautiful movement for what you're trying to put your finger on. http://www.georgekessler.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=65&Itemid=83 The ...

Re: Mayor Cleaver's legacy.
Unless an issue or project had some kind of "how does this help the minority community" angle he was luke warm. Hence, the "frou, frou touristy" comment since the proposed light rail starter line didn't serve the east side. A lot of the downtown momentum of the 80's started under...

Re: Kansas City NHL Articles
Rendell is running this show and he will not give the Pens a rent free arena and half the arena profits. City and county leaders are just a side show. When you've just slashed transit in half because you're going broke it's pretty clear there's no money coming from the city and county for a new aren...

Re: ART Forum
I would agree that getting a show in the full time galleries, so to speak, is tough but KC has soooo many more opportunities for artists of all levels compared to other cities. The Boveri suggestion is just one of many for a new artist. Just about any business in the Crossroads will show an artists ...
